Presidential Classroom summer 2009

I’m attending the journalism camp this summer in D.C. What should I expect? Is anyone else here planning on attending this camp?

attended last year, but diff program. A lot of fun. lol

thanks for your help! Does anyone else have something to add?

I went to the journalism camp last year : BEST week of my life. The people you’ll meet are simply amazing - everyone is smart and all we did was talk about politics and journalism. Truly a great program. I highly recommend you bring super comfortable shoes since basically every girls’ feet fell off from all of the blisters. Also - bring food for your room. You won’t go to sleep until probably after 12 and you’ll be hungry.

Last summer I went to the Intelligence & National Security PC session, which was at the same time/place as & did a bunch of activities with the journalism kids. Very, very, wonderful week. I met a ton of like-minded kids there - funny how that happens.

I’ll echo what octobergirl92 said about staying up late. At least in my session, they had us up “working” on a project a bunch of nights until 10:30 or so at least. I was fine bringing a bunch of candy bars in my bag.

Every day they’ll give you a PC “Daily” with a nice schedule of everything you’ll be doing that day. That was quite helpful for me given that I like structure and knowing what I’ll be doing.

Last but certainly not to be overlooked is the dress code. We had to wear suits virtually all the time, which was quite difficult a lot due to the temperature outside. It wasn’t fun, but it was still very worth it. So for a packing recommendation: don’t bother packing much casual clothing at all (or even the in-between dress code they mention in the handbook) since you’ll barely need that.

Again, I wasn’t in the journalism session again, but feel free to PM me with any questions or if you’d like a copy of one of the PC Dailies with a sample schedule. Have fun (I know I did)!
