I got my Presidential Scholar candidacy letter this morning, and I’m wondering if I got the scholarship, would I be bound to BC for college? I wanted to see if I could get into other schools RD before I made a commitment.

Nope you would not be bound.

Dear Chicago701 : Replaying your statement - “If I won the Boston College Presidential Scholarship and therefore had my four years of tuition at a Top 30 institution covered, would I be bound to attend?” The answer is, of course, no - but wouldn’t you want to rethink that decision with a $200,000 price tag attached?

Seems as though Boston College would take the Presidential Scholar opportunity to the next level by requiring students on their Early Application to indicate that if they are selected as a Presidential Scholar candidate and awarded it, it would be an Early Decision situation vs. anyone who applies EA is considered. You would think the stats on the percent of EA candidates who don’t end up going to BC alone would encourage BC to want to narrow this down even more. Going this route from the get-go would weed out a lot of work, wasted time, energy, and expense on BCs part. It would additionally allow those students who would definitely accept BC as their college of choice if a Presidential Scholar a better chance because it would eliminate those upfront who are playing the game to see if they get their Ivy of choice or other top choice school.

Vikingdad that’s a great idea.
