President's Award Program

My daughter was recently accepted into U of I. Back in November she was invited to attend a luncheon sponsored by the University for academic achievement and for President’s Award candidates. It is called the President’s Award Program (PAP) Scholarship…$5,000 per year. Does anybody know about this scholarship? She just received a letter and a certificate from the program saying she is a “strong candidate” for the scholarship. If one is invited to the lunch , is subsequently admitted, and gets the certificate, does that pretty much assure she will be awarded the scholarship? How and when will we learn if she gets this?

Finally, the school she applied to…ACES… Just sent her an email saying she has been awarded a $2,000 per year department scholarship(ACES Academic Achievement Scholarship). Will this in any way reduce the PAP scholarship?

Thanks!

The President’s award, which is available to well-qualified minority candidates, is not $5,000 per year per se. It is a $1,000 scholarship per year but you can get up to another $4,000 per year based on financial need which is determined after you submit FAFSA and they issue need based awards (usually March or April). The letter she has received is not a guarantee of the scholarship but it creates a very high probability. She can have both the ACES and the President’s award but the ACES award could impact on that potential need based portion of the President’s award if the ACES scholarship, when deducted, lowers calculated need to below $5,000 a year.

Thank you for the fast response. I believe the award has changed from previous years. The letter states, “PAP recipients will receive $5,000 per year for a total of $20,000 and additional financial aid may also be available.” So it is now $5,000 without consideration of need, then possibly more. I didn’t attend the lunch, but my wife said the president indicated that the award has been increased for 2012.

The letter did say something about in order to receive full consideration for the PAP scholarship for UIUC the application (I assume is the application for admission and not for the scholarship, as I am not aware of such an application) must be received by Jan. 2. So I assume they don’t make final decisions until at least then…do you have any knowledge as to when?

I also found this, so it appears to have been increased:

"Hogan said the university also reallocated $3 million to the President’s Award Program, for a total of $7.5 million – the first increase for the program since it was established more than 25 years ago.

The program helps students who are academically gifted but financially disadvantaged, including minorities and students from Illinois counties underrepresented at the UI.

Individual awards through the president’s program will increase to $5,000 up from about $1,000 to $3,000."

However, it does read that it goes to “financially disadvantaged,” but the letter we received says no such thing.

Sorry if the hyperlink does not work…I’m new here.

I received this scholarship today! It’s 5,000 a year

My daughter received a letter today that said she had been selected for the University President’s Award Program with a $40,000.00 merit-based scholarship ($10,000 per year). Is this the same program?
She has been accepted to the Chemical Engineering Program.

Offtherails, I think your daughter’s scholarship is better and different… Congrats!

Agent…my daughter also received a letter today…$5,000 per year for four years, plus a departmental scholarship of 2k per year for a total of $28,000 for 4 years. So it looks as if the PAP scholarship is 5k regardless of need and of other scholarships. No application was needed.

We are sooo happy. My son got a letter yesterday informing him he is the recipient of a $10,000 (total $40K) a year President’s Honors Awards. He applied to Material Sciences Engineering. yohoooo! This program is rated 3rd in the nation.

I should have added the scholarship was a merit. We have not gotten around to do the FAFSA yet. I have looked for references in the University website about this scholarship, but I could not find any. We will accept it nevertheless.

EngiDad2015- My Daughter received the same one for ChemE. What were your sons stats? Is he a minority?
