Pressure of AP Classes Problems

Hey CC,

I’m a high school freshman who is taking a schedule that looks like this:

English 1 K (K is the equivalent of honor’s class I think, anyways its “upper level”)
Geometry K
AP Human Geography
Biology K
Orchestra 1
Computer Programming K
Health (Require a 1/2 credit of this to graduate, taking a “PACE” class 2nd semester)

Now I have several things that come in mind, this is the AP courses I have planned to take over my 4 years of high school:

AP Human Geography
AP World History
AP USH
AP US Govt
AP Macro Economics
AP English 3
AP English 4
AP Computer Science
AP Physics I
AP Physics C

For a total of a whopping 10 AP by the time I graduate. Some of them I will take because I have a genuine passion for them (AP Computer Science, APUSH, AP Physics I)

However, I do not like AP Human Geography (I do not have a natural affinity for social science) and I’m not the best English guy out there. I’m thinking of changing my Human Geography into World Geography K (accerlerated level/honors) and English 3-4 into English 3-4 K too; dropping my AP numbers to 7.

I was wondering if this would hurt my chances of getting into my dream university of MIT as I want to be a computer science major.

However I am planning to take AP Biology concurrent with AP Physics I o, to bring my numbers up to 8, is this a wise choice?

Could anyone help me with my questions?

It should not hurt you. If AP’s are available, taking 6-8 over the course of your HS career should be sufficient. After that, the law of diminishing returns kicks in, meaning that, for admissions purposes, the 9th AP course will not add substantially more to your application than the 8th. Many colleges, including MIT, say that AP’s are not an arms race where the one with the most wins.

Taking AP Bio and AP Physics 1 concurrently is fine, assuming that doubling up on science is not at the expense of a core subject. If you are taking AP Bio to get from 7 AP’s to 8, see my answer above.

Thank you for that, I just a question:

4.0 GPA or more AP classes? What will colleges prefer?

I’d like to maximize my chances; and I’m a bit worried >.<

Colleges don’t have to choose between high grades and course rigor. They have plenty of applicants with both.

So, if you still have what is considered a very rigorous schedule for your school even after dropping down in two classes, great! You’ll be fine.

On the other hand, dropping down to make an easy year / easy 4.0 is usually frowned upon.

The most rigorous courseload that you can handle.

You’re a freshman; there is a long way to go  A rigorous schedule and GPA are just one part of the college application.

Do you guys think I should drop AP Human Geography? I’m not really into that class, and I heard it’s a useless AP.

I’m not a big fan of taking courses just because they’re AP. Personally, I could not see myself taking this course, but many other students enjoyed it. I’m not sure that I would call it “useless,” but I will say that many private colleges and universities won’t offer AP credit for it. If the subject does not interest you, don’t take it.

Having said that, you said earlier that you “do not have a natural affinity for social science.” Maybe you do and maybe you don’t, but you do have 4 other AP social science courses on your list.
