Prestige: Duke Engineering vs. Cornell Engineering

I know I am comparing two different areas of study, but which degree is more marketable in general: a degree in Applied Physics from Cornell or a degree in Biomedical Engineering from Duke? Which degree conveys more prestige?

Am I right to say Duke is more prestigious than Cornell in general while Cornell Engineering is more prestigious than Duke Engineering?

Thanks

Although Cornell has a better engineering program than Duke in other areas, Duke has a better BME program. I would think an engineering degree in BME would be more marketable than a degree in Applied Physics but it is hard to predict. Furthermore, an undergrad degree in Applied Physics with minor in BME from Cornell and a graduate degree in BME from Duke might be a great combination.

BTW, Cornell’s Applied Physics program is one of the best, probably THE best.

The climate in Ithaca is much more exciting than Durham.

I think Cornell is more prestigious than Duke in general. Certainly, Cornell engineering is better than Duke’s overall, but Duke’s biomed engineering program is very good. I would go to the school that you like for reasons beyond prestige…especially if you are focused on a particular course of study and have accurate information on how to evaluate it.

The only reason Cornell is more prestigious than Duke is because of its Ivy status. Go to Duke if you want prestige. Cornell is honestly known for the kids who want to say they’re in the Ivy leauge but cant get to any of the higher ups. Duke is on par with Brown, Dartmouth.

and Brown is lower rated than Cornell (where I went as an undergrad, turning down Yale; and then went on to Harvard and Columbia). These are both excellent schools, as is Brown. Go where it’s best for you and your course of study.

Both are equally prestigious overall. Visit the campuses and see which one suits you better.

Since you asked about prestige, Cornell engineering is more prestigious than Duke engineering, and Cornell is a little better all around academically, and has superior peer assessment. This doesn’t mean, of course, that it provides a better match for you. BTW, I noticed Sweetlax88 posts a lot of dumb comments on CC (perfect example above), and clearly has a vendetta against Cornell, and I assume it’s because he/she wasn’t accepted there–you should always suspect this when you see ignorant, disparaging comments hurled at a college.

SorGirl, your assumption was dead…wrong.

I got in, whohoo! What post do I have that has a vendetta against Cornell. Please, please pick one out instead of spouting your ignorant bs.

Sweetlax88, you made this post on March 31:

It is clear you did not get into Cornell. When you say, “I got rejected everywhere” we should assume this means you were rejected from Cornell.

I’d say Duke > Cornell.

SorGirl, if you actually read my posts rather than judging me from one thread, I would really appreciate it. Yes, I was waitlisted at 2 ivy leauges. Later I got in, Dartmouth and Cornell. Surprising isnt it?

pretty surprising yah …

duke only became prestigious very recently, but they are equally prestigious … you should look into fit/cost as deciding factor

Oh and an apology would be accepted.

I have been told that Dartmouth has not gone to the waitlist yet, so it would be pretty surprising if you got in Sweetlax. Also, I’m doubtful that Cornell has gone to the waitlist before the May 1st deadline.

sorry sweetlax, I didn’t check your previous posts. Are you in the class of 2010 (In which case you could clearly have gotten in off a waiting list)?

Dartmouth and Cornell already gave waitlist decisions? I don’t know, but I’m finding that really funny SweetLax.

I guess they haven’t publicly gave them out yet. My college con recieved a call and told me. I was really suprised they would actually contact him so early…but hey, Im not complaining.

And BTW, what schools are waitlist decisions out for yet? I know my friend said he was off the waitlist at Columbia (he doesn’t go to my school so there is no way his cc got a call) but I am doubtful.

Faculty quality:

Cornell 23

many schools

Duke 3

^^Sure. Because Duke engineering is a lot smaller than those other schools.

even though i got into duke  i’m still gonna say cornell has a better reputation for engineering. i’d heard of it before i even knew anything about duke.
