I don’t have the faintest idea what he wants to do, aside from the fact that he basically rejected the idea of going into any high-paying profession because of the “high levels of stress” involved in the requisite education.

well looking at the alumni, it seems passable.

50% go to higher education.

I live in Olympia and the residents here don’t view Evergreen very well. It has a reputation of churning out protesters. While I don’t mind a good protest, it seems some of the Evergreen students will protest anything (like stopping the war by lining the street that war equipment is coming HOME from the war on - through the Port of Olympia–if they really wanted to distrupt the war equipment they aren’t the sharpest tools in the shed). They are also known to become violent (and it is usually senseless violence) when a peaceful protest can give a more powerful message.

Of course, most Evergreen students are not anarchists. I have a lot of co-workers who earned their degrees at Evergreen and they are contributing members of society.

So . . . I guess your friend needs to figure out what he wants to do with his life. It is my understanding that students earn an undergraduate degree and there is no major associated with it since students take the classes they want. I heard that from someone who used to work at Evergreen. Also, students don’t get grades and a friend who earned her degree there said they don’t have tests but she was evaluated in each class (usually by making a presentation).

It is very eco-friendly so if your friend is into that, it would be a great school for him.

Regarding the use of pot, a friend who currently works at Evergreen says that since Washington legalized pot, students smoke it out in the open on campus so if that would bug your friend, I suggest he look for other schools.

I have a daughter who is a senior in HS this year and just asked her how HS students view Evergreen and she said she would rather attend the local community college than Evergreen. She said it is good for alternative students but mainstream students avoid it. She described it as hippies in a yurt, burning incense, smoking pot, and dancing to bongo drums.

Evergreen is an excellent school, that does self-select because it is not everyone’s cup of tea. No one goes to Evergreen because they didn’t get into other schools; it is too unusual and for many, too risky. If you don’t want to attend classes led by TAs, like a low student-professor ratio, are self-motivated and self-disciplined, if you know what you want to study, or don’t and want a broad menu, then this is the school. Teachers have high expectations and seminars are lively. Alumni is accomplished. Small percentage of students are young and terminally cool, but there are others that balance the equation. You can’t come out of this school without critical analysis and integrity. Excellent pre-med science programs. Great for pre-law, great for graduate school. Very well respected.
