prestige-related questions

1) RPI and Rose-Hulman are generally considered to be not very difficult to get into. Why? Aren’t they considered to be top engineering schools?

2) Deep Springs College: A lot of people have heard about Deep Springs College and many are impressed by it. However, the school only receives about 150 applicants per year. Why?

Rose-Hulman and RPI are moderately selective. However, that is because the student applicants are very “self-selecting”. Students who are interested in engineering tend to have higher grades in high school (especially in science/math classes). Yes, both are very good engineering schools.

Deep Springs is not for everyone. It’s a 2 year college where you work together in a community and read books. If you prefer a structured learning environment or if you are decided on a career/major, Deep Springs is NOT the place for you.

Deep Springs is an all-guys school with out any social life because it’s almost in the middle of nowhere (desert.) You definitely have to have the love of the outdoors to even consider it because of the rural location. Those who apply to DS are bent on going there, so it’s “self-selecting” in a way, with it’s 90% yield.

What Pierre said. I will not say that Rose-Hulman is necessary prestigious if not. To me, it is just a “good engineering” which is a largely sufficient consideration a for TECH school. Now the difference is huge between prestige and efficiency.

Rose-Hulman is not prestigious but it is one of the top 10 engineering schools in the country. I have heard of engineering graduates in a department with 31 seniors yet there were 40 companies on campus looking for seniors in their major. Job placement at Rose-Hulman is supposedly very good. I think that’s more important than prestige.

Yes. As a fact, the modules for engineer to look for schools are very different from those of the majors. Rose-Hulman is supposedly known to have an excellent job placement. It is also very known in industry. Thus, besides those two facts, an aspiring engineer doesn`t need anything else to be satisfied.

Now, it is clear that this school is not prestigious and that the "WoW" factor would certainly not occur here but then again, a school like rose doesn`t need it and is not even looking for it.
