A friend and I were discussing this today, so I’m curious on opinions from a larger group:

Consider those relatively presitigious scholarships given to cream-of-the-crop students. (I think Barry Goldwater would fit in there, as well as Arizona Flinns, and tons more I don’t know the names of.) They provide a full-ride to some number of years of undergrad education, as well as send out your names to places and give you awards that make you pretty well-known. They’ve a big deal.

Now, say your college costs are covered: you’ve gotten enough scholarships or your family is swimming in money and could pay your tuition twice over (as if those people exist!).

Do you still apply, just for the glory of being named a _____ winner?

Discuss!

I would hope not! Leave the money for the rest of us who need it!

well from what i have read about the goldwater, you apply and the scholarship is given based on merit, but the money is based on need. so if you are completely covered, you can still be named a goldwater scholar, but then the people who need the money get it:) so everyone is happy. but really, you could get the money and then use it to pay for grad school!

^ I love those merit programs that have criteria for the amount you get. I know most of the undergrad scholarships I’ve wanted to apply to were total “We’re giving you x amount to pay for freshman year, so take it!” and I feel guilty and just don’t apply.

mesquite girl - i remember you were a johnson finalist @ W&L - i think my d met you, anyway - where did you decide to go? D isn’t going there - the days on campus showed her that it really wasn’t a good fit in terms of size/location - much to parents chagrin!

Well i didnt get the johnson but i got a full ride robert e lee scholarship. unfortunately, W&L just turned out not to be my cup of tea - too much drinking, rural town, and too far from home. it did make it into my final three, but i finally chose U of Alabama. the honors programs and scholarships make it incredible. where did your D decide?
