Pretty Selective requirements.

Alright so here it goes…
I want a college close to home “Maryland”
That has allot of gamers in it, great skiing near by, offers a degree in Psychology or Computer Science “have not decided”, I can get in with a 3.75GPA “unweighted”, not over $30,000-$35,000, and thats it, I am a resident of Pennsylvania but seconds away from Maryland.

Don’t recommend an Ivy, seriously I don’t really have a chance none of my SATs are above 670 and my lowest is a 600! I was not “active” much in school I did 3-4 clubs.

I want to refrain from New York City area or bad areas.

Edit: I took Pre-AP US History in 9th
10th grade was in AP US History II and English 10 Honors
This year I am in Pre-Calculus (H), AP Computer Science, AP Human Geo, and English Pre-AP.

Do you need Financial Aid?

Have you calculated your EFC yet to see if your family would qualify at the Finaid website? Money is often an important consideration in this process!

No we haven’t yet, my mom thinks we shouldn’t do it in junior year.

[FinAid | Calculators | Expected Family Contribution (EFC) and Financial Aid](<a href=“Your Guide for College Financial Aid - Finaid”>Expected Family Contribution (EFC) Calculator - Finaid)

No not doing the “FAFSA” to apply for aid.

Use the EFC Calculator above or use the one on the Collegeboard website to see what your family’s EFC might be or give you a rough idea of what you are up against!

Ooo I see, I will look into that when my mom gets home from New York “she was on Dr.Oz xD, in the audience” most of that stuff I don’t entirely know.

But excluding cost and such from our minds, any other schools you can recommend?

RPI came to my mind when I was reading your post. Trying to think of great skiing near Maryland has me confused. How close to home do you need to be? Maybe University of Rochester?

The price tag of 30-35/k a year is a tough requirement if you are thinking private schools because many of them run 40-50/K a year. (Goucher, Washington College)

When I think of skiing, I think of University of Vermont, which is probably running about 40k a year for OOS students. Burlington on Lake Champlain, such a great city for college kids, too.

Maryland has a ski area in Western Maryland, Wisp, that is fun. Pennsylvania has Seven Springs southeast of Pittsburgh, and Whitetail, Round Top, and Liberty near Gettysburg. Not “great” skiing, but you take what you can get in this area.

Agree with the other posters that you need to start with your EFC. There are private schools like Juniata that offer merit aid.

[St. Mary’s College of Maryland - Costs & Aid - Tuition and Fees](http://www.smcm.edu/admissions/costs/costs_tuition.html)

St. Mary’s of Maryland (Public Honors College) runs about 35k, OOS.
Don’t know about the skiing close by!

@SLUMOM
St Mary look pretty nice, but it doesn’t have a Computer Science degree that I want, just a Computer Information Science, which I hear is for more System Anaylist rather than programmers. If I decide to go for a Psychology degree instead thats one of the top on my list.

@John Yeah I went to Wisp long ago, close to a decade. I would love to go to college around there. White Tail, Round Top, and Liberty I already go to allot.

Have you all heard anything good about RIT?

@Hitch
Just close enough that I can drive home for holidays and summers. I want to limit myself to the north east mostly. Rochester would be fine, University of Rochester is way to much though.

UVA perhaps. And FYI RIT is a solid school for CS I am not sure about Psy

CS is not a programmer degree. Programming is a small, but important part, to that degree. But it is very mathematically based. If your math skills are strong, take a year long intro class right away so you have a better idea what it is about. You aren’t in AP calc or AP physics, so that tells me you will have to be sure your math skills are good. But you are right, CIS is a much weaker major.

I’ve never actually gotten the chance to recommend this school before, but you should take a look at Shepherd University. It’s the public liberal arts college in the state of West Virginia. It’s near skiiing, has all of your potential majors, and the total cost of attendance for 2010-2011 is $25,309.00.

Check it out!

We visited here a few years back, Hood College in Frederick, MD, very nice location, a women’s school that went co-ed. Looks like a full year is about $40,000, though, but they have the major you are interested in.

We were very impressed by how friendly & outgoing everybody was! While we were on tour, a professor stopped us in the hallway in one of the buidlings, asked my D where she was from, what she would like to major in, etc. Then took us to a professor’s office just down the hall, who taught that subject! There we were offered Krispy Kreme Doughnuts & coffee and had a nice chat. H & I never forgot that, we were just starting out with our oldest child of four, on the college search.

Since you’re only a junior, there is a chance you could improve your SAT. Also, take the ACT…some kids do better on that.

James Madison is virtually at the doorstep of wonderful skiing.

@BrownParent: Well I want to go forth with a career in Game Programming and Development. My guidance counselor told me getting a degree in Game Design is not going to help you with other jobs if game industry does not work out, told me to go for a Computer Science degree. She never said anything about programming degree though. I am not sure if I will be putting forth to that yet though.

I did not get into AP Calculus AB this year, but not allot of juniors do apparently. I really want to get into it next year “if I can”, AP Physics again I did not get recommend for, but the guidance said thats mostly a “senior” class. I would take them if I could.

But to be honest, I am not 100% at math and science. I am really good but I don’t enjoy it much. I am re-considering CS maybe for a different job in the game industry like maybe writing the game. I have a year or more to get this worked out I guess…

So far I really really like RIT, it seems great. I liked allot of what you all recommended but allot of them just did not seem “right”. Thanks for the help!

Game Design at Champlain in Burlington, Vermont might be something to look at.
The skiing would be good, too.

RIT is a wonderful choice! Good luck to you!
