primary vs secondary source

I’m way confused on the whole primary source vs secondary source thing. It’s fine when I’m doing something historical, like the magna carta or something, but for instance, I’m reading an newspaper article right now that mentions a survey taken from some website. is this survey a secondary source of a primary source? it’s not homework, i just never fully got the grasp of it all

It depends on how you’re looking at it and what the survey is about.
-The newspaper article would be a secondary source because they didn’t do the survey.
-If the website conducted the survey, that could be considered primary.
-The survey itself: if it is about something happening now (say people’s thoughts on health care or their opinion of a historical event) then it is a primary source.
