"Prince of Wales" Part 2

I don’t know why this interests me but for some reason it does . . . So I understand (sort of) how “Prince of Wales” came to be one of the English royalty’s titles, but now I am wondering whether people in England or Wales today still think about the history when Charles calls himself “Prince of Wales.” Maybe because I am just learning about this, but it strikes me that the English treated the Welsh quite badly when Wales was conquered–for example, the young children of the Welsh royal family were imprisoned for life. Granted that there is not much that seems appealing about being a figurehead monarch, but being “Prince of Wales,” given the history between England and Wales, seems especially unappealing.
