Overall my interview went well. She asked me about my GPA and I was proud to tell her it was one point shy of a 4.0. She then asked me about my SAT score. I didn’t tell her the number but did mention that I felt I could have done better. She also took an interest in my internet project I developed, and allowed me to share with her my strong interest in computer science.
The fact that I told her that I could have done better on the SAT have a negative impact on her report? I wanted to be honest.
No, unless you scored 1600 or 2400 it’s not uncommon for a student applying to highly selective colleges to not be satisfied with their SAT score. Don’t worry and good luck
Thank you for the quick response. If you’r able to answer…I’m curious to know if Ivy’s offer interviews to everyone or to applicants who only stand a chance. I ask because Alumni interviewers take time out of their busy schedule (my alumnus face-timed me from her office) and naturally don’t get paid to do this. Why would colleges, especially highly selective ones, waste valuable time of an alumnus only to have the applicant get denied anyway? It’s not as if you pay for the interview and the school profits from it.
Interviews for Ivy schools (and other selective schools) are usually based on alumni availability. These schools want to interview as many applicants as possible. For most applicants, the interview does not impact their application much, if at all. From the point of a view of a family friend who is an interviewer for an Ivy, the interviews are a good way for students to learn more about the school, and the alumni get an opportunity to stay involved with the school.
As an interviewer, I’m really surprised that she would discuss your grades and test scores at all. My view is that the point of the interview is to find out what your interests goals are. Discussing GPAs and SATs just makes applicants defensive. Also, the admissions office already knows all that stuff; what they want is a better sense of you as a person.
In any case, I doubt that what you said about your SAT scores will have any influence on the report, and it definitely won’t affect you chance of being admitted.
