Princeton students are boycotting a particular brand of humus because the company that makes the humus donates money to the Israeli soildiers. This Palistinian student group wants a neutral humus on the campus of Princeton. This is real folks and it is making headlines all over the country and in Israel.

From the Daily Princetonian:

"Bitran also created a Boycott Sabra Hummus event that had 129 people listed as attending as of Thursday evening.

In response, officers of Tigers for Israel created their own event on Facebook, titled Save the Hummus!–Vote Against the Sabra Hummus Boycott. It had 1,878 people listed as attending as of Thursday evening."

A. actually Sabra doesnt donate, its Strauss group, which owns half of Sabra, that donates for welfare and culture needs of soldiers (as so many US folks do for US soldiers)

B. I very much doubt that ALL or even most Princeton students are boycotting.

C. some folks launched a referendum to remove Sabra and replace it. Later they said they just wanted to add another hummus, but IIUC it was too late to change the referendum. AFAIK Princeton does not have alternate brands for all branded foods (they DO have hummus freshly made in the cafeteria on some days, IIUC)

As for me, I have “liked” Sabra Hummus on facebook, and intend to only buy Sabra henceforth. Its delicious, of course. Also, Israel has a right to defend itself, and there is nothing wrong with Israeli companies donating to help IDF soldiers.

DePaul U has removed Sabra from the cafeteria, IIUC.

I had posted the same link yesterday as pudmadkate and my thread was removed. I am not sure what terms of service I am violating.

oh I am hungry now. I love hummus

COllege kids are so funny - are they going to start boycotting all these products now because Philip Morris is the parent company?

( I also think PBR should be in there someplace)
;)

I’m sorry, but there is a difference between HUMUS (which is an ingredient in good soil that gardeners crave) and HUMMUS, which is a tasty food made from ground chickpeas.

^^YES!!! Thank you, dmd! I saw the thread title and was wondering if someone from Princeton made an important scientific discovery related to soil chemistry.

^^ My mistake…It is indeed Hummus.

Good thing this hasn’t yet spread to upstate NY:

My daughter is OBSESSED with Sabra cups with pretzels…

and fwiw, I totally agree with the above posters; if we stop eating products where the parents company supports whatever, we’d all starve…

Following the lead of our dear …, if it was not for him, it would have not happened…he is very clear about his preferences.

I don’t see anything wrong with avoiding brands for ethical reasons. I will not buy Domino’s Pizza, for example, because its owner was a major donor to Operation Rescue, and the profits he derived from Domino’s went straight to it.

I boycott hummus, but a different reason. Yuk! LOL

College kids are always trying to find something to protest. If this makes them feel as though they’re helping a cause, good for them. However, I don’t think it’s worthy of any headlines.

Consolation: I boycott Domino’s…but for a whole different reason…it’s yucky…

^I love hummus, especially one from Costco, I do not care about political affiliation of vendor. Most of our stuff in stores are from China anyway. Does it means that we all support communism? I hope not.

Same thing is happening at DePaul…the students protested Sabra brand, the school pulled it from the dining hall, now it’s been reinstated.

^I believe that Sabra is one of choices at Costco. I like another brand because it is less salty. But if Sabra supports Israel, maybe I will start buying it…naah, taste is more important.

note, sabra also makes tahini and baba ganoush, not as easy to find though.

I had some sabra hummus last night. Yum!

The Chick Pea Battle at Old Nassau. Sounds like an obscure civil war skirmish!!! LOL.

Tom Monoghan sold Dominoes to Bain Capital more than a decade ago. Many of those proceeds have been used in Catholic philanthropy.

What on earth are you talking about?
