MIT is more well-known for its engineering and Princeton is just merging a major of chemical and biomedical engineering for next year. What would be the better option? Is MIT’s program vastly superior? Is Princeton better in any significant ways?

choose the school that fits you the best, seriously!!
Some people love MIT, some people hate it
Some people love Princeton, some people hate it
when you’re at the level of these schools, choose on fit

MIT is considered the best engineering school, but it is geared towards grad students, so you might not be getting everything out of the programs
Princeton focuses on undergrads

MIT’s program is superior, you should probably pick that of you are 100% gung-ho die hard about BME…but if you are even slightly unsure, Princeton will give you opportunities to go into any field, whether it be grad school or banking

Furthermore, Princeton’s undergrad program is probably more superior overall, so if you want a well rounded education, Princeton rules…you will have no problem doing BME grad school at MIT

Here are rankings for “feeder schools”, Princeton > MIT

MIT appeals to a very specific type of person, prepare to be surrounded by super nerds and do homework most of the time, it’s pretty tough…at Princeton most people get a good education and have fun at the same time

Well this is all for a friend. She was super obsessed with MIT but wants to consider both but wasn’t sure about Princeton for BME. She is pretty sure about it, but the type of engineering might change. Not much else. Personally, I think Princeton would be better because of the well-rounded education and she COULD go to MIT for grad school.

gunther, the Princeton ChE. Department that Biological Engineering is going to be operating out of and has been for a while is ranked #6 in the country:

[Chemical - Best Engineering Schools - Graduate Schools - Education - US News and World Report](http://grad-schools.usnews.rankingsandreviews.com/best-graduate-schools/top-engineering-schools/chemical-engineering)

so the quality of engineering that your friend will be receiving is not that far off from MIT’s.

I’m a huge Princeton advocate, but in this case, if you are sure of what you want, MIT is your better option.

Thanks for the quality advice. But I thought getting into MIT grad from MIT undergrad was more difficult than getting in from other Ivies.

Notwithstanding the very different nature of the two schools,

If you are absolutely positive you want to do BME, do MIT. If you have some doubts or if you want a broader undergraduate education, do Princeton.

I think she’s pretty certain but is at Princeton now for their Princeton Preview and loving it so I don’t know what she’s going to do.

Both are really good, but I’d have to give the slight edge to MIT. Also, if your interested in biomedical engineering you could also look at some other schools such as Duke and Harvard. Remember the more schools you apply to, the higher chance you have of getting into one of them.

gunther, when you say that she is at Princeton now…do you mean this Princeton?

Gunther, if she’s highly social, and thinks some day she would be a VP in a company vs. the Chief Scientist, Princeton is the better choice. Fun is valuable:).

I do mean that gorgeous Princeton I would have loved to go to. I think she’d rather be Chief Scientist to tell you the truth.
