My current HP Officejet all in one doesn’t seem to like my Macbook! I have installed and uninstalled several time to no avail. As it is an older printer, we have decided to replace it. Besides not printing well with my Mac, it also will only fax one page at a time.

I have heard than Epson and Canon are more compatible with Macs, but don’t know if that is the case. I want a reliable all in one (print, fax, scan and copy) that will work well with both the Mac and PC. I do not need it to be able to print pictures, but if it does I would enjoy that. I have always had HP printers and in the past have been happy with them, but this last one has just been too finicky.

The printer is connected to the PC desktop and we have a switch box that we plug into the laptops when we need to print. I am the only one in the family with a MAC, so I am the problem child!! Another reason to consider either an Epson and Canon is my husband has an HP all in one at the office and for some reason he can not have both scanners on his computer. We figured if I got a different brand he would not have a conflict and be able to scan at both the office and home.

I’ve never had problems setting up a printer for a Mac before and that includes printers that are 15 years old. We have Epson and Canon printers at home. We have HP printers in the office.

I have always had Epson ( except for my Apple laser) but I like the ink from Canon better- still have the Epson 4 in one but also a Canon Pixma inkjet that gets more use)

I haven’t had a Mac printer problem in years. Our home network has two Macs on it and they can even print to my old HP 4M+ from the early ninties.

I do not have Leopard ( I am running 10.4.11) on my Macbook so that is not the problem. I can print, and have for a year; I just get lots of blank pages as well as some PDF will not print at all.

My guess is this printer is just past it prime or there is some glitch with compatibility between this model and my Macbook. I am tired of faxing one page at a time; this happens with the PC’s also, not just the Mac. At one time the fax worked correctly so I know there is just a problem with the printer.

We have an “HP Photosmart C4180 All-in-One.” It works with our Macs (desk top and notebook) and D’s school issued PC. No problems at all. It’s actually the same printer they give the students at her school. Love it!

Check out the link to HP’s Officejet models. Look up your model number and see if it’s compatible with your Apple operating system. If your HP is compatible with Macs, you can search the site for a downloadable software driver

Consumer Reports also does periodic review of printers.

Re scanners:

Your husband has two USB devices hanging off his office PC (all-in-one printer/fax/scanner and another scanner)? Connected to separate USB ports?

My printer is compatible and I have tried redownloading the drivers. I have spoken with HP as well as Apple; no one seems to know why the problem.

As for my husbands issues, he has an HP all-in-one in his personal office that just recently became his; it was a hand me down from another office! Once he tried to installed the office HP, the one at home would no longer scan. I can not tell you how many times he has been online with HP tech support; the only suggestion was to only use one scanner for his computer. We thought maybe with 2 different brands of all-in-ones, maybe there would not be a compatibility issue.

The other thought was to buy 2 need all-in-ones of the same make and model and put one at the office and one at home. My husband has a big laser printer for the office, he just wants something small for his personal office.

Your setup at home: You have a main Windows PC that is connected to your HP printer via a USB switch. A USB cable from your main computer plugs into the switch. A USB cable from your Macbook also plugs into the switch. The printer plugs into the switch’s output.

When you want to print from your Macbook, try the following: Turn off your Macbook. Turn the printer off. Turn the switch to connect your Macbook Turn on your printer. Next, turn on your Macbook. Try printing. If this doesn’t work, it’s time for a new printer.

Re printer and secondary scanner at work: Your husband (at work) has a PC which has a scanner attached. He inherits an HP all-in-one printer. He installs the software for this printer and connects it to his PC. A possible solution would be to go to the Control Panel, select Printers, right click on the printer he wants to use and (temporarily) make it the default printer.

He brought the printer home and installed it? Did you create a new printer setup? Did you go back to the Control panel to return your old printer as the “default” printer when you ran into problems?

I can get my Mac and printer to work together, but for some reason some pdf’s or webpages do not print; the printer will print the header and the rest of the page will be blank. Emails are about the only thing that print correctly from the Mac.

HP has told my husband that he can not have a scanner at home and one at the office (or maybe it is just our 2 printers/scanners that do not work together.) We know how to switch back to the default printer and both printers print, but he can only get one or the other to scan, not both!

It is no biggie; I am going to replace the home all-in-one since it seem to not like us anymore!!

snowball, I have the same operating system. I print using two different Epsons and I’ve never had a problem with either. Never had to download their software either, just plugged into the USB port and it was good to go. The Epson also works with my husband’s PC, so no problem with compatibility there.

I’ve had macs at home for many years - and am provided a PC laptop by work. The PC is almost always the machine that gives me printer problems so I am surprised that you are having problems on the Mac side.

I would guess that the problems are on the printer as you have said and would go buy a new machine. I have had no problems with HP or with Epson. I don’t have any experience with Canon printers. I would suggest you consider a network printer rather than a USB one - this would allow you to share the printer with all of the computers on the network and not have to mess around with a physical switch.

I use Firefox and that was where the problems started; so I tried Safari with the same results.

I have been researching printers and as soon as I decide on the model my husband will take the home HP to the office. He just wants to be able to scan and prints, so the slow faxing will not be an issue for him.

We have two HP printers…an all in one and a laser printer. Home system is networked. We have both Mac and PC computers in this household and there is no problem with any of them.

BTW - I should have mentioned - we have three printers hanging off our network - an HP laser, an HP Inkjet all in one, and an OLD Epson Photo 820. All have worked so long I can’t remember having a problem other than running out of ink or paper.
