Priority and Early Decision

Hi!
I’m an international school student trying to apply to HKUST.

There’s a slight problem I’ve confronted: I want to apply to HKUST as ED but my school’s counselor told me that I can’t because I have applied to Purdue, priority.

I’m very concerned because I couldn’t search a single thing saying that if you have applied to a university as priority, you can’t apply to other university as ED.
As far as I know, Purdue’s priority is non-binding and so even though I apply to HKUST as ED, there won’t be any conflicts…

So is what my counselor saying true?
Can I not apply to HKUST as ED because I have already applied as priority for Purdue?

Your reply is much appreciated =)
Thank you!

Purdue’s priority application generates a non-binding decision and you can apply anywhere else either early action or early decision.

So what the counselor told me is wrong, right?
Just to make sure, because she said: Having applied EA and/or Priority already, you are not supposed to file an ED application.

It appears that your counselor made a mistake.

It is probably time to replace your counselor:

Some US colleges that have EA restrict you from applying ED elsewhere and four, Yale, Stanford, Princeton, and Harvard, also prohibit you from applying EA elsewhere (subject to certain exceptions). However, most colleges that have EA (and all that call it “priority date”) actually allow you to apply EA or ED elsewhere, so your counselor’s making the blanket statement that, if you apply EA or priority to any college, you are prohibited from applying ED anywhere shows that her actual knowledge of the rules and colleges is likely very limited and thus any advice given may be subject to question.

Haha…

I told her how I am actually able to apply so, and she now tells me that it’s an “honor” thing and - although the universities wouldn’t know that you’ve applied ED and stuff - it’s an “unethical” act to do.

What I don’t get here is: why is it “unethical”?? Is it really “unethical”?? I mean it’s non-binding so I should have choice to apply ED to anywhere else!
