Private College-CCC-UC transfer

My daughter went to the University of San Francisco for her freshman year. She got a 4.0 GPA and Dean’s honor roll. She didn’t really like it there and wants to transfer to a UC. We were told that she should go to a CCC for her second year because it is easier to transfer that way. She also had good grades so far at the CC even though the semester has started recently. Her high school GPA was not great and she did not take the SAT.
My question is, was this the right decision? She probably can’t TAG because she won’t have 30 CCC credits when she applies to transfer. She has two social media marketing internships and decent extracurriculars. What are her chances of getting into UCD or UCSB as a communications major? She is so stressed because she realized she can’t TAG without all the CCC credits. Anyone with a similar path/ I would love to hear your experiences.

@Gumbymom your input would be much appreciated.

Yes, this is a good decision when trying to transfer to a UC since CCC transfers get priority and over 90% of transfers are from California CC’s.

As a Junior level transfer, her HS school academics or EC’s will not be considered, only what she has accomplished post HS graduation.

She can see how her GPA compares with this link: https://www.universityofcalifornia.edu/about-us/information-center/transfers-major

Based on this data although it is from 2023, she has a solid chance for transfer.

Good luck to her.

Thank you so much! That makes me feel better!
She will be happy to hear that.

If she continues maintaining a strong GPA at the CCC (as she did at the University of San Francisco), she will be in a competitive position for transfer to UCs. A high GPA is a key factor in the transfer process, especially for UCs that place a strong emphasis on academic performance.

You appear to have misread the TAG requirements. When you apply for TAG they require that you have 30 semester units of college credit but that credit can be from any college in the world, not just a CCC. It is only by the spring of your final year before transferring that you must have 30 CCC semester units. See page 1 of https://admission.universityofcalifornia.edu/_assets/files/transfer-requirements/2025-26-tag-matrix-with-summary-of-changes.pdf

I hope she did end up submitting a TAG application since the deadline was Sep 30th
