<p>I am currently attending Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa. It is small, private, and reputable for biology and pre-med. </p>
<p>I was wondering if I should even apply to big-name med schools (like the top 20’s on the national rankings).</p>
<p>I have a 3.711 GPA, and extracurricular involvement is covered.</p>

<p>Should you apply? If you have a competitive MCAT score, certainly. There’s no reason not to.</p>
<p>But that of course predicates that you’re also applying to other schools where you are also competitive, not just the big name ones. Top school, bottom school, your choice of undergrad really won’t make a bit of difference if you are competitive (and besides, at this point, even if it did, there’s not much you can do about it).</p>
<p>If you’re asking whether your undergrad institution makes a difference in your chances of getting into good med schools, then the answer is no.</p>
<p>Also, if your school is “reputable for pre-med”, wouldn’t that imply that students from your school have a VERY good history of getting into big name med schools?</p>
<p>We don’t say the answer is “no.” We say the answer is: “Such an effect is suspected, but not provable, and definitely not very large. It is vastly more important that you succeed wherever you are.”</p>
