Private student loans

Just enrolled in UoP and got the pell grant plus student loans to pay for it. Didnt know I would only get about 900 bacc after tuition. When talking to my financial advisor (from the school) I asked if there was any other loans I could get so I could have more money to live on and he said only personal loans and such. I dont have the greatest credit because when I was younger my parents put bills in my name and didnt pay them. I also dont have a willing co signer. Anyone know of a bad credit type of private loan? When I signed up for school I figured I would get a nice checc after tuition for cost of living just like my homie at the community college gets. With UoP thats not the case because of how expensive it is (something I should have researched before signing up). Now im in school and still trying to figure out a way to pay for life. Any suggestions?

Since you say you’re getting only $900 back after tuition, does that mean you’re living off campus? If so, your COA should include an amount for living expenses and your parents would be eligible for a PLUS loan. If they aren’t approved for credit reasons, then you will become eligible for an additional $4K unsubsidized Stafford loan. Also, if you have a very low EFC, ask if UoP has any federal TRIO programs that you might qualify. They sometimes have additional grant money or small loans available for unmet need but may be administered through a different office than Financial Aid.

How much more do you need? Are you working over the summer and will you work next year during school? I’m guessing you have a work study award since you’re Pell eligible. Try to use all of it and borrow the least amount you actually need to stay in school…you’ll thank yourself every month later on that you did! You might investigate on campus jobs with perks - ie. dining hall workers get a free meal at some schools, RA’s receive a free room, bookstores may give employee discounts.

UoP = University of Phoenix online?
