<p>can someone tell me about the private colleges in california?
i’m a california resident and i was wondering which privates accept students with low gpas and high sat scores. I know that privates don’t have cutt offs for gpas or sat scores but they have averages. </p>

<p>Santa Clara University–average 3.6 UW GPA with SATs 592CR/613M and estimated SAT Writing of 630. (Total 1205/1600 and 1835/2400)</p>
<p>University of San Francisco–average 3.45 UW GPA and estimated SATs of 565/560/600 (1125/1600 and 1725/2400)</p>

<p>I have never heard this before. Could you explain a little what “specialized students” are?</p>

<p>ramses88, it is my understanding that Stanford admits students who have a special talent in a single category–for example a musical protege, or an expert in microbiology research–or an expert athlete. Notice that athletes like Tiger Woods and Mike Mussina and John McEnroe all went to Stanford. In addition they have many students who are admitted because they are sons or daughters of alumni who have made lavish donations to the university–for example to build an entire building or wing of a building–or to fund a research grant in an area that Stanford is extremely interested in pursuing. Lastly, they admit about 20% of their students as URMs. The test scores of these students have to be included in Stanford’s numbers, which bring the overall average down. Without these unusual students, the GPA averages and test averages would be much, much higher than what they post. P.S. These average GPA and SAT numbers come directly from Princeton Review–and you can look them up for yourself.</p>
<p>I have found that for public universities, the way they weigh the personal statement is healvily based on points ( ex. 250 pts for first generation student). </p>

<p>You shouldn’t really trust Princeton Review. I have a feeling Stanford is a lot more competitive than 2000 SATs and 3.8 unweighted. According to Yahoo Education, 3.90 is the average unweighted. It is true that Stanford accepts a lot of “geniuses”. One girl at my school was low average at academics, but she was a good piano player ( not sure how good she was ). She was very dumb in my opinion and struggled to get Bs and an 1800 SAT. According to a friend, she was very good, but not extremely talented.
I’m pretty sure Santa Clara University accepts anyone with the money and that meets the minimum GPA requirement.</p>
