At a state school, you could probably get a decent amount of money. Winning outside scholarships is just a ratio. The number you apply to and the effort you put into the applications is pretty much proportional to the number you’ll receive.

Now is a great time to start looking. I didn’t start my scholarship search until the second half of senior year, and many scholarships have earlier deadlines.

Winning scholarships definitely depends on the effort and work you put into it. In high school, I applied for over 75 scholarships and won 18. Are you a junior or senior right now? If you’re a rising senior, you should definitely definitely apply for the Horatio Alger Scholarship (www.horatioalger.org). You can get up to $20,000. It is for overcoming adversity, financial need, academic achievement, and community involvement. It’s due October 2007. Also check out the Gates Millennium Scholarship (www.gmsp.org). It’s due in January 2008. It sounds like you have a great profile for scholarships. I’d encourage you to continue to volunteer regularly (if possible, a consistent volunteer position), continue with extracurricular activities (find something you are passionate about), and continue improving and revising your essay. If you have any questions or would like some suggestions (I have plenty =P), send me a PM. Now is a perfect time to start organizing your scholarship portfolio.
