Anyone here knowledgeable about probiotics? I have been taking antibiotics for about 6 weeks for an eyelid infection and I also have seen what had been slow but steady weight losss come to an abrupt plateau. I had not connected the two until today, when I read that some weight loss experts advise taking probitics. The article I was reading didn’t say why exactly, so I will do some more research, but I tought I’d ask here whether anyone has any experience with this.

I am not an expert
The idea of taking probiotics is a sound one. Sometimes the antibiotics kill of some of the healthy bacteria in the colon. When this happens you might get an over growth of the “bad” bacteria (one is called C-difficile) and then you get major GI upset.

A doc friend of mine takes probiotics when she is on antibiotics. FWIW. I take 'em now and then, not every day.

We give them in the hospital, fairly routinely these days for folks on antibiotics. I take them periodically.

There are various probiotic mixtures of bacteria for sale. The health food stores keep them in a refrigerator, to keep them at maximal effectiveness.

But no experience with weight loss or not. It is not that big a deal to just get some and see if it helps, however, don’t pin great hopes on that ending your plateau.

How do probiotics compare to yogurt?

Zillions more bacteria per dose. After hauling myself out my seat, the stuff I use says 8 billion per capsule. This is more than can be reasonably obtained from yogurt.

Try Cuturelle or Florastor

I take acidophillus pearls when on antibiotics and give them to my daughters as well. i find when I take them my stomach which is often unsettled feels better. I think they are useful.

No evidence that they work to help with stomach issues. The jury is still out with regard to antibiotics. Physicians tell their patients to take them with antibiotics, but as soon the person realizes they are not covered by insurance and look at their cost, they refuse.

Also some studies show not good for immuncompromsed patients. I always gave to son when he was on antibiotics–helped.
Probiotics much less than c diff drugs, especially the newest.
Curious how / why helps weight loss.

I had an adverse reaction to a very strong antibiotic although i didnt realize it until I had suffered for several months.Terrible stomach pain and boosting. Ultimately I went to a gastroenterologist. He determined that the cipro I had taken had virtually destroyed all the “good bacteria” in my colon. He prescribed some dietary changes and a probiotic. After about 12 weeks I finally was feeling so much better. I was able to go back to all my regular foods and went off the probiotics. My internist still recommends them occasionally if I feel out of sorts. For me, well, I feel I got my life back.

Oops. I meant “bloating” not “boosting”! (Fun with iphones)

I took probiotics on chemo.

i use vsl3–it is available without prescription and is far better than other over the counter probiotics imho.

Has anyone ever experienced an improvement of symptoms from taking probiotics for Irritable Bowel Disease? My D seems to suffer from this illness from time to time. She experiences periods of relative activity, followed by periods of relative quite. Right now, she appears to be in a relative quite phase. Also, has Irritable Bowel ever been know to morph into a more serious disease like Crohn’s?

I had a staph infection (ankle surgery for removal of hardware) this summer. I had took a four-week course of IV antibiotics (self-administered–had a line in my arm). Doctor suggested taking probiotics for any potential stomach problems. Took the probiotics for the entire 4 weeks of antibiotic treatment and didn’t have any stomach problems. I took a brand that I got from a health food store in my area–they weren’t particularly expensive ($37 for 300 capsules). I didn’t even finish the bottle. I still have them in my fridge. I’ve not heard of probiotics for weight loss.

H has IBS and he started taking probiotics about a year ago and feels that it does help. Could be a placebo effect, but if it makes him feel better, then it’s a good thing.

I have IBS and did not think that the probiotics helped, but I was only taking acidophilus from the drug store… not sure if there are better options than what I tried. I think I will try them again anyway next time I am on antibiotics, that sounds promising.

My IBS seems to be atypical, though, so I would certainly recommend that anybody with IBS try this themselves and see how they do. You never know.

I frequent the jpouch.org website. The people there are as friendly as the CC family. Lots of people there with UC, Fap and general bowel questions…</mm>
