problem of low grading for freshman at some colleges

Q: I have heard that some of the smaller, less popular/competitive colleges are very tough graders for the first two years to make it more difficult for their students to transfer out. Can anyone comment on this?

applemom, I’ve have heard of what you said, but I doubt its true.

OTOH, I’ve definitely heard of something called “weed-out” classes. These are very time intensive, heavy courseload intro-level classes that many first and second year students will encounter. They are called “weed-out” b/c they separate those truly interested in the major from those who are not.

The thing is, these intro-level courses(e.g. Chem I, Calc I, Bio I, English Comp., etc.) are the easiest to transfer to other colleges.

While these classes may be what your talking about(not sure), I dont think their intention is what you said, and I dont believe their difficulty is limited to smaller/less competitive schools.

Thanks, alipes07. I think I got that message from some of the very small colleges in Pennsylvania that we visited. They don’t want to admit a bunch of freshmen who end up leaving after two years.
Anyone else?
