Problems with financial aid!

I have been admitted into SJU and applied for financial aid but unfortunately they were only able to offer me 2,500 dollars of financial aid. I spoke with them and they told me that I can resort to a financial aid appeal process but that even so, the amounts are not very large. Also, the deadline to pay my enrollment fee of $ 500 is until March 1st and the response of the financial aid appeal process is until the end of March. I can not make any final decisions until I can know my financial aid package. Looking for information on the internet, I found that student loans are a possibility but as I am an international student,I can not access them without an American cosigner and I don’t have one. I really want to attend this university. What I can do? What do you suggest me to do?

I suggest you file the appeal, but NOT register for the school. If the appeal comes through, you can register late if there is still room.

It is unlikely you’ll get enough to attend. American students take government loans, which aren’t available to you. You might have to work and earn enough to attend the school one semester at a time. It is very difficult for American students to afford college, but twice as hard for foreign students.

Why do you have to send your deposit by March 1?

but is no there possibility or existence of any student loan without cosigner ( for international students) or something like that?

that’s the date that is reported on university’s webpage, I think it is their deadline deposit for early decision II applicants thumper1

How much can you afford?

There are thousands of universities and colleges in the US. As such for most international students getting in somewhere is not a big issue. Getting in specifically where they want to go can be an issue. However, university and college in the US is generally quite expensive compared to most other countries. Financial aid is usually very limited for international students. As such, paying for university is very often the most difficult issue for international students, and can be impossible in many or most cases.

By the way, there are at least two universities in the US that are abbreviated “SJU”. There are others that are close (such as SJSU). Thus I am not sure which of these you are referring to. Regardless, you are probably better off finding a less expensive school, even if it is not in the USA.

were you accepted to SJU in NYC?

my family is willing to pay 2500 dollars per year for my education and that’s a great amount where I’m from DadTwoGirls

no, I was accepted to Saint Joseph’s University in Philly sybbie719

No, there are no loans for international students that don’t require financial qualification (usually meaning a co-signer). The government student loan program is for citizens or legal permanent residents.

Private lenders are required to follow certain regulations if they want to lend money under the student loan provisions, or even if they want to lend any unsecured amounts. It’s unlikely you’d qualify, and so they offer the option of having a co-signer but one of you is going to have to prove you are able to repay the loan.

You were accepted ED 2? With significant financial issues…why did you apply ED2 to ANY college that doesn’t meet full need for all?

This school will likely be unaffordable. You can ask for an extension while you appleal your aid…but you need a TON more money…and that is not likely to happen.

The school costs near,y $60,000 a year…and you got $2500 aid. And your family can pay $2500. That’s $5000 total… Are you really expecting this school to increase your aid by $55,000?

I hope you have some affordable colleges on your application list…

Is there any university in your home country that you can attend for $2,500 per year? I am hard pressed to think of anything in the US or Canada that would be less than about US $20k per year total cost for everything.

The exception is that there are a very small number of universities in the US which meet “full need” for all students. However, they are exceptionally competitive for international students, get very strong applicants, and accept only a very small number of these. Even these would be hard to attend with only $2,500 per year available to you due to “incidental expenses” and the extent that the university’s definition of “full need” is not always precisely the same as reality.

It was for a recommendation. Also, on their webpage they said that they had one of the most comprehensible and affordable financial aid programs and I was guided by that. I have Princeton, NYU, Loyola Marymount and Yale but I don’t know if I will get in because they’re very competitive schools thumper1

Princeton and Yale are two of the schools that say that they will meet full need for accepted students. Even then you need to be careful if you have only $2,500 of “cushion” available to you. They are of course both exceptionally hard to get into. I have only very limited knowledge of NYU but from what I have heard it tends to be expensive.

yeah, that’s the cost of the best universities in my home country since I am from Peru and 2500 dollars equals 8000 Peruvian nuebos soles .It is far above that the average peruvian could pay for the tuition of their children DadTwoGirls

NYU won’t meet your need, nor will Loyola Marymount. Princeton or Yale likely will if you get in.

You would need to be a tippy tippy top student to be in contention for admission to Princeton and Yale. If you get accepted AND they calculate your need to be low, you could end up wothnsufficient aid to attend.

NYU and Loyola Marymount don’t guarantee to meet full need for all…

But right now…it sounds like you have a ED2 acceptance to deal with. Unless you have some reasonable expectation that this school is going to come up with an additional $55,000 in aid for you, I would suggest you decline the acceptance, and move on.

What is your SAT or ACT score? And your GPA? Maybe someone here has a suggestion of an affordable college for you to apply to.

What is your family annual income?

I am very glad to hear that you are very likely to have affordable options in Peru. My daughter has a very good friend from South America (who stayed with us on exchange for a couple of months) and she also is going to university in her home country due to affordability.

Good luck and best wishes!

I tried to get into Harvard under ED but unfortunately I didn’t get in. I have two more friends who tried to enter Yale and Princeton but they also did not admit them, it is very difficult to know intparent

my school doesn’t have GPA but I was ranked third in my whole school level when I graduated from high school. My SAT score was 1100, very low I know, and my family annual income…well, in dollars is 7440 dollars but in peruvian nuevos soles is 25,000. The exchange rate between the dollar and the new Peruvian sun is 3.2, that is what makes it seem that there was nothing saved thumper 1
