My son will be attending a state university in the fall. This university provided on-line registration and my son did not get classes he wanted. It is only June! Is there a chance that he will get classes he wants when school starts in late August? Do many kids drop and add in the beginning of the year?

Any advice is greatly appreciated as I am concerned with the registered classes–not sure they are the right fit.

There’s typically “summer melt” at many schools - if your online system doesn’t permit waitlisting, then he should monitor class availability on the site on a regular basis, especially as payment deadlines approach. Of course, your state university may not operate in the same way.

My son’s university locked his registration and will not allow any changes until school starts in September. I don’t understand why he can’t drop and add now. What do you mean by “summer melt”? Do you think it will be possible to get good classes in September when they are full now?

I think it’ll depend on the particular college and the particular classes but it’s not unusual to see some movement as the time approaches or within a week or so after classes start. Sometimes profs will allow additional people into the class as well but again, it varies by college. The student can sometimes petition the prof for entry into the class.

Also, is there a waitlist at the school?

You might get a more accurate answer if you can post your question on the CC forum for that college if there is one or possibly state the college you’re referring to. People might have recent relevant experience in this area there.
