I finally tried the Goo Gone and it works!! No more spots on the shirts.

^^^^^
That is great to know. D has been using the sheets with no problem so far, but I’ll include some goo gone in a care package just in case. Had you already bought your son new shirts?

Yes, I did because he was going back to his apartment an hour and a half away, and he needed the shirts for work. Oh well, at least they were on sale at Kohl’s!

Wow, I know so many moms that are sending their kids with this product. I’m sending son with a 3X concentrated detergent to start, that’s HE, since I was told that’s what was required at his college. I myself will only use 2X concentrated. Just don’t trust concentrated stuff. At least the 3X bottle will be lighter for son to carry when he finally does three weeks worth of clothing.

Also, I am sending him to school first off with “less nice” clothes. Any nice polos or dress shirts are ones he’s used for school functions the last year or so. The “new” stuff is from Walmart or Kmart, no more than ten bucks an item. I did order/buy some nice shirts from Penney’s, but will send those in a month, if he needs them, once he’s figured out how to do laundry without ruining clothes.

D has been using the Purex sheets for a year now at school without problems. The school machines are front loaders.

Front load machines have this problem with softener in general, although it sounds like these are quite bad. I use half as much and dilute. As it comes out during the rinse cycle from the side, if one drop (or several drops) are left at the side due to force of spinning, and only drop into the clothes once the machine slows, you get spots. No one in my house can see them but me, but they are all men. Usually rewashing with no softener will get rid of it.
Pretty annoying for such expensive machines.

To minimize this, make sure you are filling the washer, and not doing half loads. In a front loading machine it adds water based on the weight of the clothes. If you don’t put much in, there will be very little water and the problem is more likely

I have never used softener for laundry. So, don’t see the point of doing the 3 in 1, other than not having to carry liquid. Is there any more “convenient” product that just has laundry detergent than just the more concentrated liquids?

I’ve never used softener, and I hate the laundry sheets for the dryer. IMHO, everything has too much fragrance. I get All Free & Clear, with no scent, and my clothes smell – clean. Not fruity.

Amen to that, VH! I can’t stand scented detergent, dryer sheets, etc. I’m not overly sensitive to fragrances in general, but I really, really dislike the laundry products. All Free & clear is the only stuff I’ll use.

Softener in bath towels actually make them less absorbant. I do skip it in those.

So, is the consensus that the Purex sheets cause the oily stains only when used with front-loading machines? S used them last summer when he stayed in a dorm for a summer program and had no problems, but I don’t know whether he was using top- or front-loading machines.

I used about 3 boxes last year with no problems, at least that I noticed. I thought I would try another load and washed sheets using the Purex 3-in-1. Sure enough, I found a number of stains and had to rewash the sheets using the Goo Gone. One stain did not come out. Maybe they changed the formula, or I have a bad box. But the company never responded to my email, so I would not buy this product again, nor would I recommend it. The convenience is not worth the trouble.
