Problems

College Junior here. I have been diagnosed with aspergers syndrome. I want to be a teacher but in order to enter the College ed program I have to pass Praxis test. I passed everything except math. I have always struggled with math my whole life. No matter how much tutoring I undergo I can’t understand the algebra and geometry. I’ve taken the Praxis three times already with no improvement towards a passing score. I think I have dyscalculia. How can I get an exemption from the math? Extra time won’t help. It is a fundamental inability to process math. It is not laziness.

Find out if whether or not you have a specific learning disability in mathematics would help you to have this Praxis requirement waived. If the diagnosis will help then you will need to be evaluated by a psychologist to determine whether or not you have a learning disability.

  1. Find out if this test that you are trying to pass has a waiver for the math section, for your condition
  2. If so, find out what documentation you need in order to get it waived. (This is usually a letter from a psychiatrist, psychologist, or both)
  3. Pursue whatever it is that you need.

Best of luck you! I hope everything works out with this test.
I’m sure it’s nothing like your problem, but I’ve always had an extremely hard time processing math as well.
