Process of Applying to Pitt

How do you apply to Pitt? Step by Step what do you have to do? Just want to learn for when I apply next year or so.

1.) Get your resources together. That means:
—A: Teacher Recommendations (depending on what you apply for, get 2 science, 1 other, or 2 humanities, 1 other).
—B: Counselor Recommendation
—C: Essay (this can be ANYTHING you want it to be, and does not have to be a “Why Pitt” essay)
—D: Transcript
—E: SAT/ACT scores
—F: Resume/List of ECs
—G: Any numbers/addresses/information you need (like your current GPA, parents addresses, etc.)

Go online to the application (https://www.admissions.pitt.edu/freshapp/freshman.asp</a>) and begin to fill it out. This will involve clicking on things like “I will send my transcript/SAT scores” etc. You will attach your essay to this application.

Pay the fee. Submit your application.

Get the information for teacher recommendations (i.e. where they mail the letter to, or whom they email) and inform your teachers/give them pre-addressed/pre-stamped envelopes (do this EARLY).

Go to your Guidance Counselor or Transcript Office and request that they send your transcript to Pitt.

Go online to collegeboard or the ACT website and fill out a form to mail your scores to Pitt. This will cost money (I think like $15? Not sure).

You should have gotten an application number when you filled your online application out. If you would like, email OAFA (oafa@pitt.edu) with your application number and anything else you want (like your resume or list of extracurriculars).

If you want to, contact OAFA and ask for a phone interview.

If you can, schedule an on-campus tour at some point after applying.

The most important thing is to apply EARLY. I would say between end of summer and mid-September is the best time for scholarships and hearing back quickly (if you have lower stats). Don’t wait around if Pitt is your top choice!

How do I get part F done? Whose going to approve that, I know what my EC’s are, but how are they going to have proof?

The grammar freak in me points out it is “Who is” or “Who’s”. Anyway…

No one approves it. You could run it by your GC, who will probably bring up the ECs that you do in his/her rec letter. Your teachers that you ask to write rec letters might also bring it up if they know you do it/are the teacher sponsor of the club. Pitt as a school might contact your GC/school to see if it’s true (unlikely), but obviously the point is-- don’t lie.

How is someone going to know you did varsity rather than JV or vice versa? Everything else I understand. So when you fill out application you list all your extra curricular activities?

Any important ones that you feel Pitt should know about. That one time you volunteered at the homeless shelter for two hours, you can leave out. But running track for 2 years or being in the theater club for 4 years, definitely put it on there.

Hey Awesome, so I’m doing the app and I can’t find a place for EC’s. Need I send them separately a resume? Thanks!

You can email your resume of ECs to OAFA directly. Make sure to put identifying information in the document (full name, application number, etc.)
