Process of elimination

When I do practice tests, I find myself never utilizing the PoE. I just wanted to know how PoE has worked for you guys. Do you guys use PoE? Does it help?

It works best for Writing and CR, useless IMO in math. For CR passages, when you get to a question, before even thinking of the choices and choosing one, read each one and put an X on the ones you KNOW can’t be true. You will ALWAYS find 2 downright ■■■■■■■■ choices that don’t make any sense and OFTEN 3. So you will almost always be left with only 2-3 choices to decide between. Next, look for keywords to eliminate more choices. If the line numbers listed for instance in the question talk about how many people are scared and intrigued by the Mayan Calendar, choices dealing with " Mayan culture" would be eliminated off the bat. This is a crude example, but you probably will get the gist of what I am saying and have seen something similar on practice tests I assume. Now you will be left with 2 answers, and only one if you are lucky! At this point, it is basically how well you understand the material and how good you are at that section…I can’t tell you the answer, your intelligence and knowledge must find it in a very small pool of choices you now have!

Few examples of where I use PoE:

Vocab questions (mostly double blank ones): Pick own word, and eliminate ones that are blatantly wrong. Now you’re usually down to 2 that might fit the context… saves time for the 2 space ones so you don’t have to place both words and then determine.

Passage based: anything not supported or mentioned by the text etc… all those tips that people give for CR apply here in eliminating choices. It’s usually easier for me to cross off answer choices instead of finding the correct answer right off. But if there is one that pops right out, I’ll also justify to myself why the others are wrong.

Writing: Cross off anything ungrammatical in “Improving Sentences”. PoE helps in the Pick the Error choices in justifying No Error ones occasionally.

So yeah, PoE is decent for me.

Poe works really well for me in passage reading, because I can cross any answers that doesn’t appear in passage and their always atleast 2 answers crossed.

For someone with your math skills (which are top of the chart) you won’t NEED poe in math – you will see the algebraic solution. But there will be times that you COULD have used it if you had felt like it. For example, problems that can be solved with 2 simultaneous equations can often by solved by poe. But I wouldn’t bother unless you hit a problem where you don’t in fact “see” the algebra. Then it’s time to turn to the non-traditional ways…

I use it especially with writing, the sentence improvement questions.
