I have one color done and I have told my hair dresser time and again that my roots show rather quickly. It’s not just new growth, it fades away a quarter inch or so in just 2 weeks. I use shampoo fir colored treated hair. I even let her talk me into a $25 shampoo that was supposed to be amazing and it didn’t work st all. I might as well been using regular shampoo. I’ll let her know about that.
When I use plain old Miss Clairol orvrootbtouch up, it lasts twice as long on my roots, so I do t know what’s up with that.
I do like when she does it every 8 weeks as my hair is shoulder length and it really freshens it up and I know she gets it all.
Do you think I should ask her to used the over the counter stuff on my roots only, if I buy it? Or do you think I should use it before I see her, then just let her color it? She charges $110 and I give a 20% tip, so I’m disappointed in it not lasting longer.
I used to have that problem. My hairdresser uses Olaplex - the professional process- when coloring my hair and I use the No. 3 at home once a week. That has helped with fade quite a bit. What type of color does she use?
Have you asked her about if she needs to change up what she us using? I get mine done every 4 weeks and it holds pretty well then BOOM suddenly white at the parting (but that is from growth not fading). She has had to change up the mix a couple of times as my hair became more resistant to color (I think it is pretty much white like my Mum’s was which will be nice once I let it grow out). I would not be happy with roots at 2 weeks!
Since menopause I have one section of my hair on one side that loses the color quickly. It’s not growth. She has tried different things and she has consulted other colorists in her salon. It’s better but I still have to have a powder similar to @thumper1 that I use for week 3 and 4 when I pull my hair back. It isn’t noticeable if I have my hair down. This is the same section of hair that when I was younger wouldn’t take the perm. We have noticed that when I’m taking hormone replacement the dye seems to stick better.
I also once had another stylist do my color and the dye washed out quickly. The consensus was she probably forgot to put the grey drops in the solution. I have no idea what that actually means. If I have an event my stylist will redo that section free of charge. I usually call, stop in and she applies color. I drive home and wash it out myself.
I have had my hair colored for years and notice that the color doesn’t last like it used to. I think it’s because my own hair is much greyer now. I like the Clairol spray for touch ups and get it done more often.
I only had my hair colored a few times at a salon. It never seemed to cover well at the roots, and I don’t think the colorists covered all the way to my scalp. In two weeks, my skunk stripe was visible. My box color seemed to last and cover better, so I did that for years. The whiter I got, the more often I needed touch ups, which finally became a constant source of frustration.
I finally stripped the dye, went blonde, and started the process of growing out my natural color last year. It’s only three or so inches grown out at this point, but it’s so freeing to not do anything but occasional trims.
I color at home and take special care to really lay it on the gray root areas. Plus I leave it on longer than the directions suggest. This works for me, but I’m guessing that a hair stylist would be adverse to leaving it on longer than directed.
I am a color at home person also. I use Wella color and it doesn’t fade much. I actually wind up with hair too dark as it grows, because even though I only do my roots for most of the time, the color builds and winds up dark.
I also use Style Edit, and it buys me at least a week extra. (I could color my hair every 3 weeks, but try to go 4 or so).
A friend of mine used to take the color she wanted to her stylist, but she gave that up at some point.
I love Bumble and Bumble products. Their shampoo has preserved color better than any other shampoo, and since I benefit from thickening shampoo, their version of that is well worth the price (small bottle, about $22-25; very large bottle, about 75)
I also use their Thickening spray after washings, and I have many other Bb products I have used and still use.
Ask what she is using? Obviously it isn’t any good. Tell her it is not lasting. She may not be great at coloring, consider another stylist. Sounds like she uses a demi permanent to me or your hair is too resistant for her product (might need more ammonia/more developer) but if you don’t tell her, she wont know. You are not especially fussy if a boxed dye with ammonia suits you as per clairol root touch up, maybe just do your own hair.
A lot of pros color first, wash after. That's fine for their product, but you can go in with clean hair, so the natural oils don't resist the new dye. Just don't be severe about it, some oil protects the shafts.
Yes, use someting like what thumper notes. My gal recommended it, we tried some shades together (before a dye job) and it was pretty freaking amazing. She freely admitted lots of her clients don't want the big bill so often.
Of course, you can always buy your own dye at the drug store and color your own hair.
Is Style Edit basically the same thing as L’oreal Root Spray? You just spray it on the skunk line until the next washing? I use that, plus the mascara type thing for the roots on my temples. I don’t mind doing that after 3 or 4 weeks for growth.
So I have not had this problem. I used to use box hair dye and switched to my hair dresser because the salon color sticks like glue and does not fade. I used to have a dark red tint in my hair but switched to brown because the red faded and looked brassy. So now I have a brown color with a few highlights put in and I like that.
But my hair dresser works for Paul Mitchell, she travels to other salons and shows them new techniques and color. She’s really good and probably the person I’ve gone to for the longest. I’ve had a lot of hair dressers and this is the best as far as color and cut I’ve ever had. So I think I got really lucky.
As far as shampoo, I either us awapuhi wild ginger by Paul Mitchell which I buy from the salon or Pureology, which is for color treated hair and is expensive. Which I’ve been finding at TJ Maxx (my new tip for finding hair products for less, but still expensive). I do think the expensive shampoo and conditioner does help a bit with fading and brassy-ness.
I might try and find a colorist, someone who does just color and see if that helps.
If you have roots growing in so quickly, I encourage you to embrace the gray. I am not telling you that you should do that … it’s an individual choice … but I honestly love my gray hair. I assure you that I did NOT think I would! I had to do it because of an allergy, but I truly think it’s wonderful.
The other thing that might help is having highlights added in - new growth isn’t quite as obvious. I have highlights every other time and it has made a huge difference. I too wish I could be silver but I’d be more Brillo. Not a good look!
^I’m finding this, too, @kelsmom. I started growing it out on a whim, but am now excited to see the end result when I get the last bits of blonde cut off. I seem to have a few white patches and a few salt/pepper patches. I did a lot of living to earn these gray hairs!
