Has anyone done this type of appeal? It is for students whose facing financial difficulties due to job losses, divorce, sickness in family. A close relative was diagnosed recently with liver cancer. We weren’t able to put that into the fafsa extra comments part of it, because it happened only a month ago. Radiation therapy costs a lot and so do other medical expenses. I was wondering if anyone had luck with getting extra aid due to these types of reasons?

Thanks.

Edit: I’m kind of paranoid, but it there anyone that they would take money away from my current awards if I send all my documents to them?

They won’t take your money away.

I’ve heard of students getting more aid when the medical situation was their own. While I don’t mean to diminish the gravity of your situation whatsoever, you will have to prepare a good reason why your parents and you are financially responsible for a close relative and how that would affect your ability to afford attending NYU. I suggest that you get as much supporting information as you can and just try.

If you can produce legit reciepts of the medical procedures then NYU will have no choice but to take it into consideration. They may be stingy but they aren’t completely heartless. I can’t really give you much else because I appealed over the phone which got me an extra 2K but you are obviously looking for much more so a phone appeal is probably out of the question for you.
