Professional sororities

Do professional sororities have the same issues with abuse and rape that social sororities and fraternities have? And please don’t freak out after my question, I’m not accusing every person in Greek life of being a criminal, but we all know this is a concern. Thanks.

Well, the vast majority of the sexual abuse is related to fraternities, not sororities. That said, the women in sororities frequently socialize with fraternities.

Abuse, rape and hazing have occurred in all sorts of student organizations, including athletic teams, marching bands and even others.

I do think a professional sorority (all women) would not be likely to have any of this, though.

I was a member of a professional fraternity (Delta Sigma Pi) which had both men and women. We had some initiation events but nothing that I would consider hazing. Anytime you get men and women together there is a chance for things to go wrong but I was never aware of anything. It had a fraternity house but was not a residential fraternity. I actually ended of marrying one of my fraternity brothers (now my wife). They joked that any children would be dividends.

No, they don’t.

That said, speaking as someone who’s worked on over 300 cases of alleged campus sexual misconduct, individual higher or lower risk behaviors are better predictors of trouble than group membership.

What kind of individual behaviors (besides actual or attempted sexual misconduct) would you consider to be indicative of a higher risk of sexual misconduct?

Getting so drunk or high that your judgment is compromised is a huge risk factor for both experiencing assault and being accused. More than 90% of my cases involve this factor.

Consensual sexual contact with strangers or near-strangers is an important, distant second.

I know high risk activities are more likely to lead to things like assault, but social fraternities snd sororities tend to encourage those behaviors.

My son was in a professional fraternity - men and women - and left after a semester.

The amount of drinking wasn’t for him. - the kid who threw up after one :).

He said everyone was nice to him when he saw them in class or on campus afterward.

I thought most professional organizations were co-ed, and referred to as fraternities (note, my social sorority is actually a fraternity by charter, because that’s how the state of NY issued the charter, and I think there are 3-4 others like that also).

Any of the professional clubs can be as wild as the members want them to be. A business fraternity can be al business and do no socializing at al, or another one can do a few activities but mostly function as a party organizing club.
