Professional vs. Non-Professional Degrees

Today at lunch I was talking to my dad about majoring in something relating to business and he told me that I should get a professional degree rather than a non-professional degree. When I asked him to explain he said that a non-professional degree would be something like marketing and a professional degree would be something like medicine or law.

However, I don’t really see the sense in this because you can be a business professional and be in marketing or advertising. My Dad said that people won’t take you seriously without one of these professional degrees.

Any opinions?

You need to go to graduate school to get a Law or Medicine degree. Certain schools have pre-law and pre-med tracks, but to be honest, your dad is mistaken. Business degrees are pre-professional degrees, and its widely accepted that even if you were to major in something like econ, you can still do well in the business world: in the end I think its all about the person.
