i just found out that in addition to going to wash u med school, my grandfather was a professor of biology and cardiology and became a professor emeritus of clinical medicine after serving on the faculty for many years.

he graduated in the top 5% of his class and practiced for decades and apparently was quite a recognized medical figure in st louis during his time.

i was wondering 2 things: 1) would this factor in to a med school admissions/interview decision at all? 2) how could i add it to my application?

i’m really just wondering so thanks for your help!

I’m not sure how to work it in your application, and I do know that if you have family that is an alumni it can help, but I wouldn’t rely too strongly on it, especially in your interview. For one thing, it wasn’t your parents (and they weight parents experiences over grandparents) and for another thing, how accomplished your grandfather is, doesn’t reflect on you really.

I’d work it into your application - it’s a great story and something you can be proud of. But tie it into your own interest in the school and your own achievements. Ultimately they decide on you but every little bit of distinction helps and like I say you can be very proud of your grandfather and his relationship with the school!
