Professors that made you "carpe diem"

Yes, the title is a little grammatically awkward. That aside, in this thread, I want you guys to post names of professors/ classes that literally changed your life. Professors that were beyond great. Professor that make UCSD worth while. Professors that deserve some sort of epic recognition. You get the idea…

[UCSD Academic Senate to Honor Seven Faculty Members and Three Graduate Students June 2 for Teaching Excellence](http://ucsdnews.ucsd.edu/newsrel/awards/academicsenate06.asp)

I’m sure there are more professors than senate honors to dish out. Anybody care to contribute some names?

Also, it seems there’s a slight lack of estrogen when it comes to the professor listing.

There’s a slight lack of estrogen in professor listings for the school as well.

Is this surprising?

My point was professors like Ana Joy Springer, Muriel Nesbitt (now only teaching summer sessions I hear), and Christina Johnson etc. aren’t on that list. That is why I’m asking for fellow classmates to contribute names. The list isn’t all encompassing.

hmm, maybe kummel? :P

yeah, he won revelle’s teaching award in 2006. most departments and colleges bestow teaching awards on professors; it just takes a little bit of poking around the internet to find them. andy kummel’s definitely a good guy though; i used to attend his lectures even though i wasn’t registered for his class.

only warning: if you go to church on a regular basis, this guy isn’t for you.

this guy was really funny when i had him though. it was like going to a stand-up comedy show every time i went to lecture.

Victor Magagna (Poli) is a good guy. His classes are easy, yes, but he’s inspirational and evocative. His lectures are like quicksilver and if you’re paying attention, you’ll see how academics go about their work. He knows his stuff and he knows how to make it accessible to all.

Mirle Bussell (USP) is amazing too. She’s perfectly on top of all of her responsibilities. There’s no busy work, no wasted time. Everything is relevant to the class and interesting.

For me, they’re both aspirational. I don’t think you’d regret having a class with either of them.

John Eggers (Math) – agreed
Mark Machina (Econ)
Victor Magagna (Poli)
Edmund Fantino (Psyc)
