I will be a freshman at Columbia next fall, and I am truly excited about Columbia’s programs and courses. I hope to major in Polisci, and do some research on British Politics. Do you guys think it would be acceptable to contact and perhaps do research with professors from other schools, seeing as they may be more helpful with the project?

It’s certainly acceptable to network with faculty from other schools, but I’m not sure you’re going to get far with this. You’re not going to get academic credit for doing research for a prof at some other school, and he’s unlikely to pay a freshman to do research for him.
