I am completely new to the financial aid process. I saw that nearly all my school required the Profile…which is real expensive for me. Is there a way for me to not pay and somehow do it cheaper…like print and then send.

any suggestions?

also, what if my parent are unemployed, do I say 0 on the income?

You can’t print and send it it, but after you complete it, it will automatically determine if you’re eligible for a fee waiver. You get a limited number of free submissions with the waiver, but you don’t need to do anything to apply for it. It will be automatic if your financial info qualifies you.

For your unemployed parent, give the figure for money earned in 2010 – perhaps there was some period of employment in 2010 that generated some income? – of if there was none at all, then you’d put 0 for that parent. There is another place on the Profile to declare any unemployment benefits received.

For 2011, they’ll ask for an estimate of what parents expect to earn, in the case of your unemployed parent --assuming they have no expectation of working in 2011 – I’d probably just put down the unemployment benefits they expect to receive. You can, in the explanatory section, note that the parent is unemployed.

If your unemployed parent received or is receiving unemployment benefits AKA checks, you need to include that and the first $2400 is untaxed. There is a line that asks about that–don’t have the form in front of me now, but you will need to enter this information on 2 different lines.

is it true that the maximum number of fee waiver for the CSS is 6? if I do qualify for this aid, will I still be able to ask colleges for one of those fee waiver pins?

When you submit the profile, they will let you know right then and there if you are eligible for the fee waiver. There is no need for a PIN or other paperwork
