I think that more would be resigning, if they had the financial means to do so. Who could blame them?
I’ve heard several professors at Georgia public universities complaining vehemently about the policies. Apparently, many are looking for jobs at universities in other states.
The opening post article is about an 88 year old professor with underlying medical conditions.
The article also mentions another professor who resigned from a different Georgia college because she had a family member for whom Covid could be fatal.
This article illustrates that we are all in this together & that what one does or doesn’t do may have deadly consequences for another. A little bit of sacrifice & respect for others should not be too much to expect under the current circumstances.
Good for the kids who are standing up for themselves. Our youth have already sacrificed nearly one and a half years of their most formative school years for the sake of others; namely, vulnerable populations, and mostly the elderly. They can only take so much of middle-aged people, who’ve enjoyed their high school and college years, imposing their morality, as they work extensively from home.
That said, professors and other teachers should not be expected to police policies handed down by school boards and administrators. That’s simply not fair.
From another article:
Bernstein asked her to wear it properly, but she said she had a “really hard time breathing” with it over her mouth and nose.
Assuming the article is accurate in quoting the student’s response, she needs a reality check. You know what else causes a “really hard time breathing?” Being infected with COVID-19. Or having a police officer kneeling on your neck.
A little perspective is in order.
hmmmm - good for the kid. That child is extremely selfish. They knew the rules up front. They should have been dismissed from the class and school if they wouldn’t comply. It’s a shame this gentleman had to take such a drastic step to protect himself. Now all the kids in that class are hosed.
News reports this morning reveal that 4 Southern states (Texas, Louisiana, Florida, & South Carolina ) are running out of oxygen which is desperately needed for Covid & other patients.
Isn’t it a forum rule that you can’t start a sentence with “This morning CNN reports…” or “This morning FOX News reports…”?
I would hope her classmates make clear the full extent of their displeasure at her selfish and entitled behavior.Perhaps she should have found another class and let the remaining 24 of her peers enjoy the class.
As I said in the Vax Life thread, there’s no way I would ever hire or give recommendations for that gal or anyone else so selfish.
There are traits I like to see in employees that go beyond classroom knowledge. Care about others is one of them.
No one was infringing upon her life or rights asking her to mask to potentially save the life of someone else - even if it hadn’t been Covid related.
I can’t imagine many parents being proud of her for this sort of stance. I guess there are always a few, but it’s sad that they bring up Snowflakes.
Absolutely, what a waste of the human spirit. Putting an 88 year old at risk, defying the rule, is not acceptable. Now the other kids are without professor. Clearly they are short professors because the article says he was called out of retirement - that’s typically when they are shot.
I am not sure if I am understanding you.
Are you suggesting an 88 year old college professor with preexisting health issues asking a student to wear a mask properly is an elderly person imposing their morality on a long suffering student?
If so we would disagree. I believe it is a simple matter of respect and civility. If wearing a mask is now tantamount (in terms of sacrifice) to storming the beaches at Normandy we face a major societal problem.
This is one of the most alarming posts I’ve seen in quite a while. You are suggesting that a young person who is subjecting her entire class and most notably an elderly professor (who came back to teach after retirement at the behest of the school) to serious danger is somehow worthy of support and empathy? I hope she is widely criticized for her selfish behavior and comes to regret her unbelievably foolish action.
Unfortunately, the rules at the school is that they can’t make students wear masks. This was a classroom rule that was ultimately unenforceable, but it was a condition of the professor that, if students wouldn’t wear a mask, he wouldn’t teach.
It’s a shame that this one student ruined it for everyone else because she couldn’t even wear a hospital mask. The bigger shame is that the University of Georgia system won’t do everything it can to make sure everyone in its campus community is safe.
Your observation about the University System of Georgia (USG) is quite accurate. Thus far, it has catered to the prevailing political view in the state and as a result, neither vaccines not masks can be mandated at any public college or university in Georgia. That said, an immunocompromised professor who was accommodating the school’s need for specialized faculty should be able to ask students to take a very minimal action (wearing a mask for 45 minutes or so) to ensure his safety.
She’s not a kid, she is a college student in a senior seminar.
Wearing a mask for an hour is not really a “sacrifice.”
I didn’t realize protecting the vulnerable and elderly and working together to stop the spread of a pandemic is a question of “morality,” but if it is, then the opposite morality would be not giving a damn about anyone but yourself.
Holy drama, Batman! “Serious danger”?!
This thinking is why we no longer have a bell curve of opinions, politics and ideology. This thinking has inverted the curve. Extremism is no longer the tails. Everything is right/wrong, black/white, good/bad, left-wing/right-wing, woke/conservative, etc, etc. And there is no room for considering other views or opinions. Try reading “What the Dog Saw” and think of it as “What the Student Saw”.
Of course she is being selfish. Her selfishness serves herself and a belief. Like selfish colonists not paying British taxes, or a selfish black woman refusing to sit at the back of the bus, etc, etc.
One person’s selfishness is another person’s protest. One person’s protest is another person’s riot. One person’s riot is another person’s insurrection.
Not wearing a mask for 45 minutes makes her Rosa Parks?
Talk about drama.
Maybe she should smoke in a restaurant or on an airplane, or break quarantine laws if she contracts antibiotic resistant tuberculosis.
She’s being a petulant, whiny brat, and being told by many politicians, for nothing more than their own political, and ultimately financial gain, that’s it’s just fine. Gotta stoke the base ya know.
Me, me, me, me, me, ME….
How sad!
