Progressive Insurance?

*Basically, Fisher states in his blog post that after Progressive failed to pay his sister’s full claim, her estate was forced to take the issue to court, where he alleges, Progressive actually defended his sister’s killer in order to minimize its liability.

I think their TV commercials are funnier than Geico’s.

in reading the case, they didnt officially represent her killer but they basically sided up with him against her. That’s awful. I don’t like either of the companies commercials. Maybe if they wasted less money on that crap they could charge affordable rates for car insurance.

Insurance companies are actually not identical any more than automobile manufacturers are identical, or colleges.
We have Pemco insurance, which happens to be pretty good insurance company & has pretty funny commercials too.
;)

I know insurance companies are not identical, I work for one. :)

I don’t think we have pemco here. I have erie… I don’t even know if I’ve ever seen an erie commercial on TV. I would guess they exist… not sure though. :)

Insurance by its nature is confrontational. However, the decision to not just pay the $75,000 owed and instead litigate is unbelievable. The parsing of words - incredible in social media.

Yes, the insurance company attorney is not “technically” the attorney for the defendant, but as it was the only “deep pocket”, since defendent’s insurance had already paid its maximum limit, Progressive was running the show. Progressive’s “case” was a passenger/friend of the defendant, who was in a coma for two months immediately following the accident, thought Ms. Fisher was at fault - in direct conflict with independent witnesses and the police report.

I saw a newsflash earlier today that Progressive and Fisher family have settled. It will be telling to see if Mr. Fisher continues to comment about the case. If he is quiet, Progressive definitely paid up big time - far more than the $75,000 - to avoid a “bad faith insurance” lawsuit. The settlement would include restrictions on further comments. I wouldn’t be surprised if it paid far more than $75,000 - Progressive needs to stop the bleeding immediately.

I am not surprised. The blog post was starting to get some attention, but then… a publicist’s dream (and an insurance company’s PR nightmare) Mark Zuckerberg commented on the blog post on his facebook page. He said, “That’s crazy” i think… which put the blog in front of an additional many million people.

Update - from CNN:

The family’s attorney, Allen Cohen, told CNN it was a monetary settlement for “tens of thousands of dollars” more than the $75,000 claim balance that the family was originally seeking.

The payment “is for their failure to exercise good faith towards their insured,” Cohen told CNN. “While I cannot tell you the amount, they did pay 100% of what we asked in this regard.”

I hope it is far more than the legal fees the Fisher’s had to pay Mr. Cohen to force Progressive to pay what it owed.

I saw it through Seth Godin’s blog (which I subscribe to).
