Have any current or past students participated in Project OutReach? Does anyone have any inside details, aside from what I can read at nyu.edu? Also when will they begin accepting appliactions for this year, and is it difficult to accepted?

thanks so much!

Unfortunately, the web page info is not up for this year yet. Usually Project Reach accepts 75-100 people, but the program seems to be growing. Last year, my S started the program on 8/25/10 (Welcome Week started 8/29/10). He got to move in early to Founders, which was very nice to avoid the crowds of Move In Day.

Separate from this, S really thought it was a good program. There was a good sense of community and they worked in Soup Kitchens primarily (with some high powered individual, forget who it was). He is returning this summer as a student leader/ supervisor, but the program has not released much info yet even to returnees. My S thinks the deadline for application submission is in July (but that is not definite).

Asked for his opinion on the program, here is what S stated:

“not sure the apps are even up
great
do it”

Thanks you so much for that answer!
It’s great to hear that your son thought it was a good program, I’m definitely going to apply.
Does your son know what exactly they’re looking for in appliacants? Out of all the students in the freshman class 100 doesn’t seem like a lot, so I want to make sure I have a chance.

Languagegirl, hehe, I am not sure he can answer that question since he will be reading apps after they are submitted.

I can only comment on what I know of his app from last year. Of course, you have to stress your commitment to community service and hopefully, that is backed by work you did during HS days.

My son basically summarized his resume. He won the Principal’s Leadership Award on the state level (for all kinds of school and community service), A Book Award for Civic Service and Social Action, the Presidential Volunteer Award (Gold Level for 400+ hours of volunteer service). He also started a non-profit organization to provide for the needs of children from lower economic backgrounds. He started the school TV News station, worked on the school paper, won a Journalistic Commentary award. A lot of ECs and awards for them, with many contributions to the local community.

You may also have to prepare a statement of why you want to participate in Project Outreach. I am not sure since S wrote it and then sent it out without asking for feedback.
