Prom Business 2010

I imagine some schools have already had prom, some are coming up. My S’s is tonight. Thought it might be fun to have a 2010 thread of fun stories, traditions, what the kids are doing this year, etc. to share!

S waited till Weds. of this week to order a tux. Yeah. It will be basic black with white shirt and cherry red tie. Every homecoming/prom the kids take pictures at the same house in the front yard - it’s a tradition! They thought about a limo and ditched that idea (yeah!) and will dine at a nice restaurant that would accept reservations (many around her will not) - prom goes to midnight, then many will go to AfterProm on the same campus as Prom for all the food, fun and prizes they can stomach until 4:30am. I have been in charge of the food for the last 4 years or so (since D #1) so I’ll be running ragged with my team of moms and dads serving everything from nachos to chilled shrimp and chicken wings!

The day is sunny and expected high of 80 so I guess the girls will be thrilled and the guys will be sweating in their tuxes. :)

Your turn!

Ours is next Sat.

They will all be meeting at 5, going to dinner, then the prom. Our DD’s group has decided that they will go to IHOP afterwards and do a sleep over afterwards.

It is now common here that the kids go stag, unless they are in a relationship. Gone are the days of hooking up just for prom and then breaking up the week after.

They also have opted not to go limo, because it is a waste of money. The rule here is that the kids meet at the hs and get on a charter bus to go to the venue. They actually collect tickets at the hs, placing an invisible stamp on their hand that is checked at the site. This stops kids from driving because they can’t enter without the stamp, and if they for some reason miss the bus, they must have a parent show up with them at the site to get them in.

The bus brings them back to the hs and they have the after prom party there or they are free to leave.

The parents of the sleep over are meeting the kids at IHOP and have the phone numbers of every parent to alert them that they have them.

Your DS is not the only late one regarding attire. I bought DD’s dress a couple of weeks ago, but we are finally going today to have it altered.

DS, who is not a senior, when to prom last night with a date he does not know really well, a senior at a nearby women’s h.s. They had a great time. After prom included bowling - he didn’t know she was on her school’s bowling team. :)

Our prom was the last weekend of April (graduation is today). My sophomore son went with his senior gf. He owns a tux, because he’s in the top show choir. She made her own dress and made him a coordinating vest and tie.

Our HS is gorgeous, and they hold prom there - it looks like a castle. There’s a short break between the dance and afterprom, where they have time to change their clothes. They have to be there by a certain time, and cannot leave and come back again. Lots of prize give-aways, lots of inflatable bouncey things, etc.

My D is in college now, but went to prom her jr and sr year. I think they like dressing up and going out to dinner and seeing everyone else dressed up, but don’t care about the dance itself (lots of grinding/rap).

My D got her dress for her senior year on clearance at the end of May her jr year - $19.99! She’s coming home from college on Tuesday - her bf is in a fraternity and we will look at the clearance racks for next year! So far she’s just been wearing all her hs formal dresses.
