<p>Even if he IMed the brother to have the brother IM the OP on the guy’s behalf, that still showed a great lack of social skills, and doesn’t sound like a fun person to go out with.</p>
<p>yes, but still… I had a friend in high school who was a magnet to the “lost souls”…when it came down to it, she loved being fawned over, even if it was the borderline-creepy guys who were doing it. She left a trail of broken hearts—she used them to be able to have dates to prom, or whatever the latest event that was happening. She saw it as being “nice”, but it really was self-serving. I think you handled this situation in a very mature manner; I hope you have a great time at prom.</p>

<p>i agree – but i also think it would have been even more disturbing if brother or other friend had given this guy her screen name and he’d then contacted her directly. we don’t know if the guy tried to get her screen name and the brother wisely failed to give it or if the guy was too awkward to even want to try im’ing directly. it can be a bit disconcerting to have someone you don’t think knows your sn suddenly appear on your im - especially given the other surrounding things about their prior interactions. something similar happened to my d once – the “friend” who released the contact info did not remain one for long.</p>
