Prominent Colleges with Low tuition fees

I’m about to complete my first year of college in NIT, Jaipur in Electrical Engineering. I am planning to change to transfer to some other college in either Canada or USA.

Which colleges would I be able to apply to for directly going into the second year, without having to repeat the first year again?

There is no way to know for certain before applying how many (if any) of your credits will be accepted. You should be able to get an estimate shortly after (or even along with) any admissions offer. However you need to know that in many cases students do not know which credits are accepted until after they start classes.

When you contact the transfer admissions offices, ask whether or not they can give you an early estimate.

@happymomof1 To reiterate, I should just ask them for the estimate and the credits that are going to be transferred, right?

You can get some idea of what their transfer policies by reading the website for information on transfer credits (search for that). You can also get some idea of the graduation requirements for electrical engineers by both looking at the section on the EE major (which will tell you what classes are required) and by searching for ‘graduation requirements’.

One big thing to remember is that even engineering programs at the most technical universities in the US have some form of ‘breadth’ or ‘distribution’ (also known as General Education or GenEd) requirements, whereas the program you are in requires only EE courses. US students typically take their GenEd requirements in their first year or two. So, even if all your courses are accepted towards your major requirement (which is not impossible, though somewhat unlikely) you will probably have some ‘first-year’ type classes to take. Remember also that courses may have similar names but cover different material (or different levels of the same material), so until the university looks at the specifics of the course they won’t be able to say if they are equivalent.

@collegemom3717 Thanks a bunch for the input! Appreciate it.

Yes. Before you apply, ask the admissions office how soon you are likely to be able to get an estimate about the credits that transfer. Do not be surprised if they tell you that you won’t be able to get an estimate until after you have been accepted.

If you know someone who used to be at your current university and who now is studying where you want to go, that person might be able to give you an idea about which courses transferred and which didn’t. But remember, colleges and universities can change their lists of acceptable transfer credits. Just because your friend got credit last year does not mean that you will this year.
