As the timeless adage goes: “No pain, no gain”. A sacrifice, a drawback or a problem is an inevitable part of an improvement, since it teaches us to become more creative and determined. Therefore, every win involves a loss, which can be seen through technology and history.
One example of why improvement involves a drawback or a problem is seen through Thomas Edison’s research to create an incandescent lightbulb. In order to enable people to work in the evening, Edison tried his best to make the lightbulb happen. Although he had achieved a little success, his research was still incomplete as the lightbulb could only last for a few hours. As Edison once said “ No one wants a lightbulb that lasts for half of the day”, he tirelessly searched for a filament that could prolong the light. Surprisingly, after nine thousands experiments, he could not fine out a proper filament. His struggle with researching did not break his volition but instead forged him to become even more resolute. Thanks to his determination, ultimately he figured out a carbonized bamboo filament that could last for hundreds of hours, marking a watershed in human history. His invention has changed our lives for centuries, enabling people to work in the evening. It is easy to observe that this great improvement results from arduous yet significant problem.
Another instance of the fact that every improvement involves a problem is seen through global warning issue. The inventions of vehicles and air conditioners change people’s lives forever, as they help us to travel quickly as well as work in a comfortable way. However, the convenience we receive accompanies with a significant problem since the exhaust fumes released from vehicles and air conditioners exacerbate the environment by destroying the ozone layer and raising the temperature of the world. The problem can become destructive as it can bring the world to an end; yet, in such situation people are trained to become more creative. We invent solar energy vehicles to replace conventional ones, new air conditioners with less exhaust fumes than their predecessors. With our creativity, we are ameliorating the problem, fixing the situations that come along with our progress. We create the problem with our creativity; thus, there are no reasons why we cannot solve it using the same source.
In conclusion, as explained by history and technology, every progress involves a significant drawback or a problem of some kind. That problem or drawback, though inevitable, tends to help people more than destroy us, since we have an oppurtunity to increase our determination and creativity
