Should I go to PROMYS for 6 weeks or overseas trip for 10 days?

Depends what the overseas trip is for. If it’s just vacation, PROMYS def; you’re probably interested in math, seeing as you got into PROMYS, and it’d help greatly. But if maybe… the trip is for some sort of learning experience… depends. Do you enjoy math enough to go to PROMYS?

The trip is just vacation, but I got the air ticket already. Now, I got in PROMYS. I will def have a lot fun in PROMYS, I do enjoy math. The problem is the ticket.

If I were you I would go to PROMYS. College admissions-wise this one is blatantly obvious but more importantly the social experience and growth you’ll get out of being in a dorm with a group of similarly interested/passionate kids is not worth giving up for a vacation. Obviously make the choice based on your own judgement, but I’m guessing since you described the trip as a vacation you won’t get too much out of it beyond sightseeing and relaxation–good things yes, but not worth giving up something like PROMYS. As for the ticket: money is important, yes, but ten years from now no matter what decision you make I guarantee you won’t look back on it and think about the money involved.

Another problem I forgot to mention: I planed to use that 4.5 weeks to study one course so I can pass the test at school and go to AP course directly. Now, if I go to PROMYS, I don’t have time to study that course any more because the test in my school is right after PROMYS. So, AP course for next year or PROMYS for the summer???

college2012mp: Definitely go to PROMYS! I did something similar last year for AwesomeMath - I wanted to skip the Precalc lane and go straight to BC Calc, so I spent the 3 weeks studying an entire year’s worth of classes and I managed to pass the final 3 days after the camp ended. So it’s certainly possible to study while at PROMYS - you’re submerged in an academic environment, so learning a few extra things won’t be too hard. You’ll get plenty of free time there, just be sure to spend it wisely.
