pronouncing "ABET"

is it like “a bet” or are the letters pronounced out?

“a bet” with a long a usually, though I guess you could just spell it out too.

What do you mean by a long a? Do you mean “uh” or the “ay” in “yay”?

like ay

You never learned about long and short vowel sounds?

I probably have, but I’m pretty much dumb in lots of areas.

Aeee (not eye) bet. like placing a bet, but the emphasis is on the “A”, not the “bet”. So – AEE- bet

ay-bee-ee-tee

Otherwise people are likely to be confused, thinking you are talking about some wager.

Everyone I have ever known says “ay-bet”

That’s how I presumed it to be pronounced.

I never really knew though, but good to know I suppose.
