Proof of health insurance?

What exact documentation does MIT require for proof of health insurance? Our medical, dental, and mental health benefits, covered under a PPO, will travel anywhere with our son. My son will have has insurance cards for all of these. How will he/we prove coverage? I have heard it can be difficult to get the MIT health insurance waived but I’ve called our insurance companies and have gotten the “ok” that he’s covered wherever he goes.

Thank-you.

It is not difficult to get the MIT health insurance waived. It doesn’t specify what documentation you need, but more information is here: [MIT Medical : Waiver FAQ](http://medweb.mit.edu/healthplans/student/waiver.html) You definitely will not need to do any more than enter some information online.

I see the deadline for fall is still Sept. 15th. As I recall, the MIT student must log on and provide the information to waive MIT insurance. We were always billed for the insurance, then reimbursed each year as the waiver went through – because tuition is due earlier, in August.

10 chars…

CalAlum,

But you can get the insurance off the bill before you have to pay, correct? It doesn’t make sense to pay first and get reimbursed, particularly for families who would be putting that on a credit card or borrowing that. If the waiver opens in July, my son should be able to get it waived before he has to pay his bill in August, or am I confused? (Happens frequently)

Thank-you for the link, lidusha.

How long is the waive process ? Can it be done before July 11? I am confused too! Thanks!

It lasts a year. Right now it doesn’t let you load the waive form, so no, or at least not yet.

The waiver for this coming school year opens sometime in July… The waiver that is available now is for waving insurance over the summer term.

Just kidding, the waiver for the summer term closed on June 15th :stuck_out_tongue: sorry

^ If you son or daughter can submit the waiver in July, then perhaps your bill will reflect the payment. If not, you can mail in your payment with a brief note explaining why you are paying less than the amount of the bill.

If you pay before the waiver is taken into account then the overpayment will be credited to the second semester bill. I think student can also withdraw the overpayment.

Don’t pay before submitting the waiver. MIT’s money people are far from the most organized; keep it as simple as possible.

wait, so submit the waiver this July, and we won’t have to pay for the insurance at all? like not even to be reimbursed later? $1,848 is kind of money I’d like to not have to pay…

Email stuplan@med.mit.edu and ask, just in case. You should be fine submitting the waiver in July.

Just FYI, the waiver is now online and open: [MIT Medical : Waiver FAQ](http://medweb.mit.edu/healthplans/student/waiver.html)
