Proper Idiom usage

Does anyone have a list of idioms and their proper usage? For example, phrases such as “contrasted to” (not with), and “preoccuptation with” as opposed to preoccupation in.

One more question:
It’s “They swam across the river.” and “They have swum across the river.” Is that right?

yes i believe that’s correct.

my dad has this huge book on american idioms but i think he has it in vietnam -_-;

[Idiomatic Usage in English](The UWF Writing Lab | University of West Florida)

here is a list just from googling. but these are rather simple and definitely not a very comprehensive list.
