Get student dorm insurance from Assurant or one of those companies. It is very inexpensive and worth it (and some cover damage to computer/phones).
Geico had a student more than x miles away discount for our auto insurance which we did when she went to college.
Note in MA it is the opposite from NC above, no way to get driver insurance unless you have a car
