Hey! so I’m a senior/incoming college undergrad and I’m new to CC. I signed up solely to ask some questions about the colleges I’ve applied to.
So far I’ve been accepted to CSU Dominguez Hills and Bakersfield but I’ve applied to CSU LA and Fullerton as well.

I’ve read loads of reviews of each of these schools but wanted to know if any of you go to these CSU campuses and have your own pros and cons for each? I’m trying to determine which school to go to in terms of location, job availability, transportation, classes, etc

I plan to double major in Communications (a concentration in either PR or Media Studies) with Business Administration.

I’m also interested in the social scenes and clubs if any exist. Please help me out :)

Frosh living in dorms (common data set section F1 or campus life tab on collegedata.com) may be a proxy for non-commuter students, which may be relevant to the social scene:

CSUB not reported
CSUDH 12%
CSUFULL 38%
CSULA 15.3%

CSUB and CSUDH are non-impacted campuses with no impacted majors except for nursing at CSUB. This means that applicants meeting baseline CSU eligibility (defined only be HS GPA and test scores) are admitted. So either the schools instantly admit anyone who applies meeting baseline CSU eligibility and is not a nursing major, or the OP knows that s/he will be admitted because s/he meets baseline CSU eligibility and is not a nursing major.

CSUF and CSULA have impaction at the campus level, so they will not know until the application window closes at the end of November what to set the admission thresholds at.

I have family members who go to Bakersfield. Very commuter, very dead social scene. Lots of first generation college students. Bakersfield is pretty much in the middle of nowhere.

That said, one relative (a current senior) was noticed by the chair of his department (Business) and given a wonderful job opportunity. So I guess the upside is, if you are a good student you can rise above the rest and get noticed by faculty and get good employment opportunities.

However, the employment opportunities will be in Bakersfield.

@newyorkcitylivin as UCB said, they’re not as impacted like other CSU’s such as Long Beach. Not to mention I have above a 3.0+ plus a pretty average SAT. :)

CSUDH is generally seen as the worst CSU by a long shot. Unless you’re a commuter and it’s your only option, I wouldn’t go there. Realistically, your peers will be massively underprepared for college, and there will be little expectation of ever graduating.

If you are looking for a more social environment, why not add Sac and/or Chico to your list?
Both have good Biz and Comm programs and will offer lots to do when you aren’t in class.

I never knew Sac State had any social environment so to speak. I’ve been there so many times when I lived around the area and it seemed like a lacking. Hell I think UCD had a better one. Chico, haha, on the other hand… But anyway I agree with ya academically.

If you want location, job availability and social environment then I think you’re looking at the wrong schools. CSU Fullerton and DH are definitely commute but I can’t say CSU LA. I wouldn’t recommend Bakersfield since it’s so dead in all areas. I’d really say to expand outside LA/OC. Why not SDSU? Or even East Bay? You’ have to live there of course but since they’re in big cities you get much more opportunities.

No question Davis has a more collegiate scene than Sac. Davis though, is hard to get into and not on the OPs radar. Sac has added some on-campus housing and some campus affiliated rooms not far away. There are frats and sororities. The area around Sac (University Ave, La Riv, etc) houses thousands of students. Football games draw prety well and there’s a pretty happening restaurant/music/bar scene too.

I’d say Sac is a lot more fun than DH but, not as fun as Chico.

Probably better internships in Sac than either.

I particularly chose around the LA area because the internship I want requires to be based in LA. However I live in NorCal, so I figured why not? I don’t really have anything to lose. My only real goal is to achieve a lot in college since I was really lazy about it in High School.

@LongRangePlan I’m really glad you said that because my top CSU is Fullerton and I was wondering what people thought of their communications dept
